Sliema's 4 goal hero John Soler

Sliema Mc Donalds took an important step this evening to secure the first honour of the season as they beat Sirens Ritter Sport 12-4 (3-1, 3-2, 2-0, 4-2) in game 1 of the Winter League final playoffs.

The result was never in doubt with Sliema always maintaining the advantage, going 6-3 up by half time with Sirens managing to keep up the pace with the Blues. After the break things changed rapidly, with John Soler leading his team’s charge to score another six goals while Sirens only managed to score twice in the last two sessions.

Soler was once again Sliema’s top scorer with 4 goals, followed by Mark Meli, James Spiteri Staines and Bogdan Rath with two goals each while Daniel Paolella and Clint Debono netted a goal each. Jurgen Borg, Charlie Zammit, Luke Caruana and Clint Mercieca scored a goal each for Sirens.

Game 2 of this playoffs series shall be played on Friday at 7:15pm

In today’s other match from the Winter League, Exiles disposed of Marsascala 14-6 (2-2, 2-1,6-2, 4-1) in the playoff for 5th and 6th place.
David Pace Lupi was Exiles’ top scorer with four goals while John Licari was the soutsiders top scorer with two goals.

On Friday at 6:00pm, Neptunes Emirates and San Giljan Firetech face off in the final for 3rd and 4th place in the Winter league.

Please note that Sirens sponsor is Ritter Sport. Further more i fully agree with Mr.L.Zammit letter on the Time of Malta dated 13.05.2011 that unfortunately pressure free competition is not longer the case!

I would just like to point out ,seeing as though there was no mention of it on this site, that Stevie was not present because he was busy playing for 3/4 placing in the Italian top division which could earn him and his club a spot in next year’s Euroleague.

true but still we can boast about something you’ ve never had and will probably never have . someone who shows off our club in international waters and not the four corners of sliema pitch. enjoy your winter league

Sliema have taken an unfair advantage over all other teams by including a foreign player even in their winter league matches, when, as all followers of the game know, foreign players have never been utilised in the past years. Were it not for the inclusion of Rath, Slliema would have lost to Neptunes last Saturday, even though they played without Stevie and Jordan Camilleri. Very poor sporting spirit by Sliema .
