On Thursday 23rd February 2012, the Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU), organized a dinner at Villa Arrigo in Naxxar as a sign of gratitude to the achievement obtained by the Maltese Rugby National Team together with the sponsors, members of the press, members of the Rugby community and players.

MRFU’s President Mr. Martin Galea thanked all those present as being part of the Rugby’s success in Malta.  Mr. Galea also mentioned the continuous challenges especially the financial ones mostly when hosting national matches which cost the MRFU € 40,000.

During this event, I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet some of the MRFU’s members and players.  The players whom I met introduced me to the rules of the game and it was interesting to know their experience which made part of the Maltese Rugby’s history.  The players shared with me their concern about the lack of support from the local authorities regarding sporting facilities.

Rugby was introduced to Malta during the British Colony where teams were formed by British Military Staff.  In the 80’s local clubs were starting to grow and the Maltese national team started a positive track in the late 90’s.

Malta’s only TV channel dedicated to local sports Malta Stars – Melita channel 614 is already broadcasting one of the matches every Tuesday at 7pm.  The MRFU and players are open for more media coverage in order to increase the Rugby’s promotion in Malta.
