Commencement of Horse Racing Season

Friday, January 16, 2015, 18:30

Next Sunday sees the start of the local horse racing season with an 8 race progamme for trotters with the highlight being a Premier Category race. First race starts at 1:30 p.m. and the distance for all the races is 2140m.

During this racing programme we will also have presentations to all those that won the season’s honours during 2014.

Champion Driver – Charles Camilleri

He is 41 years old and since 2003 has established himself as one of the best drivers on the island. He was champion driver during 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009 so this is his fifth title. During 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 he had finished as runner up. During 2014 he won a total of 39 races.

Best Trotter – Uranium des Arkads

A 7-year old French Standardbred that was registered in Malta on the 20th February 2014. He won a total of 8 races and placed once 2nd and once 3rd whilst participating in 12 races. This horse is owned by Kurt Saliba.

Champion Youth Driver – Kurt Saliba

He is 22-years old and has been driving since 2009. During the 2013 season he had finished in 4th place of the annual classification and last year he was the best young driver of the season with a total of 12 victories.

Champion Jockey – Michael Sultana

He is 26-years old and is considered as one of the best local jockeys in these recent years. He was champion jockey during 2009, 2010 and 2013 making this his fourth title. During 2011 he had finished runner up and in 2012 he had finished in 3rd place. During 2014 he won 7 out of the 11 races that were held.

Best Flat Horse – Ollie Fliptrick

A 10-year old American thoroughbred that was registered in Malta on 29th August 2010. Last year he registered one victory from 9 races. He had also won the best flat horse title during 2011. This horse is owned by Ritianne Gatt.

During 2014, 275 new horses made at least one start which is a considerable amount and 35 more than 2013. It seems as this season is not going to be any different and in fact during the first two meetings of the season 18 new horses should make their first start.
