Malta has clinched yet another European title belt in kickboxing, as Christoper Rotin has become the World Kickboxing Network (WKN) European Champion in the Welterweight category, after winning a fight against an opponent from Greece during the 20th Gladiators edition.

Christopher Rotin, from Ying Yang – Team Noel, represented Malta in a fight for the WKN Pro European Title Belt against Greek athlete Anis Antonin last Friday at the Corradino Sports Pavilion.

The bout was well fought until the end, with both athletes giving their all. Rotin had to face a taller athlete of considerable strength, who is considered one of the best in his category in Greece.

Rotin’s coach, Master Noel Mercieca, said that Rotin’s strategy was that of moving in close to Antonin when the latter starts to attack, so as not to leave space for manouveres. The Greek athlete’s technique involved frequent and perilous knee strikes, but Rotin managed to keep up a good defence, and went on to win the belt.

Also competing under the Maltese flag, Shaun Falzon from Malta Thai Boxing, who fought for the WKN Pro International Title Belt in the Middleweight category against Slovak athlete Jurah Vozar.

Although Falzon seemed to have the upper hand early on, near the end of the first round he unfortunately got knocked out by what seemed to be a lucky punch by the Slovak adversary, who naturally went on to win the belt.

Meanwhile, European Champion Keith Azzopardi from Ying Yang – Team Noel won the Gladiators Title Belt in a local fight against Milos Anic from Team Jalen. Both athletes performed well and fought thoroughly until the end, with Azzopardi taking the win.

During the same event, 14 other local athletes participated in local and international fights against athletes from Sweden, Italy and Belgium. This was also another feather in the cap for the Maltese athletes, who managed to win all the international fights.
