Last Saturday the Assoċjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi had a busy evening by holding the fifth race of the Honda Motocross National Championship 2019/2020 and also the eighth Autocross National Championship 2019/2020 event, sponsored by ASMK and Pasta Poiatti. The program ended with the Mini Car Demolition that was supposed to take place last March but was postponed due to the Covid-19.

Bernard Sammut on a Beta motorcycle won the Motocross Class A followed by Paul Muscat on a Yamaha and Kyle Camilleri on a KTM.

In Class B the Gozitan driver Jorn Stellini on a KTM motorcycle won this class followed by Michael Sant on a Husqvarna and Robert Spiteri on a Yamaha.

In the Veterans’ Class, Paul Deguara on a KTM motorcycle continued to dominate the lead followed by William Sant on a Suzuki.

In the Juniors’ Class Sheldon Camilleri Conti on a Yamaha motorcycle won this class followed by Jose Azzopardi on a KTM and Marco Tanti on a Honda motorcycle.

From the Autocross event, Alan Muscat on his Peugeot 205 dominated all the heats of the day thus he sealed his place in the Class A final.  Jean Paul Grech on a Peugeot 106, Noel Zammit on a Fiat Punto, Andrew Pisani on an Opel Nova, Kurt Aquilina and Karl Micallef both on an Opel Corsa, also qualified to the final.

Both Muscat and Grech made a very good start but Muscat took the lead of the race, followed by Zammit and Grech. The race continued where one driver after another started taking the Joker Lap. After the fourth lap Muscat’s car developed a fault and slowed down so much that Grech took the lead and ended up winning the race. Pisani and Micallef followed in 2nd and 3rd place while Aquilina finished in 4th place.

From the Class B Finals, Nicolai Aquilina on his Opel Corsa won this final followed by Justin Buttigieg on an Opel Nova, Paul Formosa on a Fiat Uno and Nicovich Chircop on a Peugeot 106.

Finally came the Mini Car Demolition Derby with 28 cars making it to the Starting Line. At the start, two parade Laps were done by all the cars on the track and soon started banging each other. One car after another started withdrawing until  two cars were left, that of Chris Cardona on a Ford Fiesta and Jurgent Gatt on Mazda 323. Despite the damage to both cars, after about 40 minutes of banging, both cars could barely move but each driver made the last efforts to give his opponent the last blow that lead to the victory. Despite Gatt had the engine running, the car could not move any more so he had no other choice but to abandon his car. So it was Cardona who was declared the winner and Gatt was his Runner-Up.

The trophies were presented by Vice-President John Micallef and General Secretary Johann Pace.

Following this successful event, the Van Demolition is expected to be take place in September 2020.

Meanwhile the Association will continue on Saturday 25th July 2020, with the last Motocross event starting at 4pm and with the ninth  Autocross event starting at 7pm.
