Chetcuti misses semifinal spot in 100m Freestyle

Sets new national record.

Malta’s swimmer, Andrew Chetcuti, failed to qualify into the semifinals of the London Olympics in the 100m Freestyle event as he swam the distance in 51.67 seconds in Heat 3 of 8.

Chetcuti bettered his qualifying time which was that of 51.98 seconds by 0.31 seconds and in the process broke the former national record which stood at 51.85 seconds.

He finished in 3rd place in his heat and his opponents were Koloyan Mikayel (Armenia), Avila Soto Kevin (Guam), LeGrand Jemal (Aruba), Hoxha Sidni (Albania), Mohammad Bidaryan (Iran), Rutherfurd Andrew (Bolivia) and Christopher Duenas (Gambia).

In the overall classification Andrew Chetcuti ended in the 39th place from 56 partecipants with the first sixteen passing on for the second round. Best time of the day was that of Nathan Adrian of USA in 48.19 seconds and the worst one of the Burundi swimmer Bertrand Beni Binobagira in 1 minute 4.57 seconds. 16 swimmers with the best times in the heats qualified to the semifinals, with the 16th and final spot going to Shaune Fraser who clocked 48.99 seconds, 2.68 seconds better than Chetcuti.
