Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club’s summer of sports continued on Wednesday afternoon when the opening race of the Garmin BSJ Open Water Swim Championships took place in Salina Bay.

Over eighty swimmers took part in the 2km swim – consisting of two, one-kilometre loops in the bay. Being the first race of the championships, swimmers took off in a mass start. Subsequent races will see swimmers split into waves based on the previous race’s timings.  Despite the large number of boats anchored in the area, swimmers had near perfect sea conditions.

Amongst the pack were the usual suspects Sarah Demicoli, Andre Camilleri, Leah Satariano, Stefano Debono Grech and Maya Schembri Rodgers – most of whom registered a personal best time.

Dylan Cachia, returned to the pack following his absence last year due to his preparations for the 2019 Youth World Championships, showed his prowess by not only finishing first but also registering a strong personal best time clocking 23 minutes 12 seconds.  In second place was Andre Camilleri – another swimmer who performed well with an improved time.  In third place was newcomer Josh Dannhauser who finished the race in 25 minutes 41 seconds.

Sarah Demicoli continued to show her undisputed position as top female open water swimmer. Demicoli finished the race in fifth overall place in 26 minutes 2 seconds well ahead of second placed Martina Micallef. Demicoli’s time was also an improvement on last year’s performance. Micallef, who finished in 27 minutes 49 seconds was followed four seconds later by Leah Satariano. Satariano also registered a better performance from last year.

Medals were presented to the top three Male and Female winners by Anna Vella, representing proteinmalta.com and Mark Gaglione, representing the championships’ main sponsors Medcomms Ltd, exclusive agents of Garmin products in Malta.   Birkirkara St. Joseph is grateful towards these two companies for their support.

The next race of the Garmin BSJ Open Water Swim Series will take place on Wednesday 29th July at 6pm in Salina. Those swimmers wishing to take part and who have not yet registered are asked to be on site at least 30 minutes before start of the race.
