Monday, March 26, 2018, 15:52

Bupa Luxol will face last year’s winners Hibernians in the final of the BOV Basketball Knockout First Division scheduled for Saturday 31st March 2018.

Representatives from both teams met during a press conference to express their views for the upcoming final, also addressed by MBA President Paul Sultana and BOV Chief Officer Peter Perotti.

‘This will be the fourth final between these two teams this season, with Luxol winning the Super Cup and Hibs getting the upper hand in the St James Shield and the Louis Borg Cup’ said Mr Sultana. ‘These two teams have displayed very cohesive units and it is no wonder that they are dominating the local basketball scene.’

‘I take this opportunity to officially announce that, following the introduction of the ‘local-foreigner’ and a team fully made up of foreign players in the BOV Amateur League, as from next season, teams will be able to have more foreigners as long as there are at least 2 Maltese players on court at any time during the game,’ continued the MBA President. ‘The aim of this initiative is to raise the level of the game, and subsequently the level of our upcoming Maltese players’

Luxol coach John Tabone stated that this is the club’s 25th Knockout final, of which they have won 16. ‘This season has been a roller-coaster of form for us, as we have had many players who had to miss games due to illness, which has effected the team’s performance. We certainly have the talent to win this game, and will approach it with a winning mentality.’

Luxol President Edgar Caruana Montaldo said that as any team President, he want his team to win. ‘A win is the reward for a whole year of sacrifices by the players, the coaches, club committee and our fans who follow and loyally support the club.’

Hibernians committee member Caroline Schiavone said that Hibernians are all set to defend the title they won last year, and have the momentum of winning the last two finals against Luxol this season. She augured a great game to both teams and a spectacle of sport for the supporters.

Hibernians’ Canadian player Chad Patus, in his fifth year playing in Malta said, ‘Every game against Luxol this season has been a tough battle and it will take a lot of effort and teamwork to come out on top. This has been a very enjoyable season where we hope to retain the BOV Knockout Cup before concentrating on the league playoffs’

“Bank of Valletta’s presence in high level sporting events in Malta has become the norm’ said Peter Perotti. ‘It is not so common for 2 teams to face each other in 4 separate finals, and we are looking forward to crown this year’s winner as well as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match.’
