Kalkara  0    Mgarr Utd   2

Mgarr were the better outfit in this game that never reached any heights. Kalkara keeper Daniel Meli saved his side from a much heavier defeat as he thwarted the Mgarr forwards on many occasions with good saves and perfect timely sorties.

The game was only six minutes old when Mgarr took the lead. Nicholas Abela served Christian Cardona with a through ball, Meli came out of his charge and cleared the ball to a corner, which was taken by Cardona and after the ball was partly cleared Gabriel Vella scored from the rebound.

Meli then saved a close-range shot by Abela after he was put through by Daniel Vassallo and in Kalkara’s only action in the first period, Luca Portelli served Liam Carter with a through ball and Kalkara keeper Ronald Vassallo neutralised the ball with a timely sortie.

Mgarr kept pressing, Gabriel Vella served Daniel Vassallo with a cross from the left and Meli saved his close-range shot. Gabriel Vella released Abela on the right flank who then crossed to Daniel Vassallo in the area but he drove out from two metres. Daniel Law then floated a perfect ball in the area from a free kick and the ball hit the base of the upright from Gabriel Vella’s effort and finished out.

Meli came to his side’s rescue once again as he saved on Gabriel Vella after a Law cross from the left flank.

In the first action after resumption Liam Carter was fouled outside the area and Mgarr keeper Ronald Vassallo saved the free kick shot by the same player.

Meli was kept busy as he saved shots by Bjorn Camilleri, Andrew Spiteri and Abela.

In another Kalkara action Carter served Chris Grima in the area and Ronald Vassallo saved his shot, and at the other end, Abela entered the area after dribbling past an opponent and Meli saved his shot.

A minute before the end of normal time Mgarr scored their second goal when Law served Daniel Vassallo with a long through ball, entered the area and as Meli mis-timed his sortie he kept advancing and placed the ball in an empty net.
