Mgarr United commence their league with a convincing win.Rebecca D’Agostino and Nikki Buttigieg’s goal spearheaded Mgarr United towards victory on their opening fixture of the BOV Women’s 1st Division after seeing off Kirkop United by two goals to nil.

It was the night of debuts as players from both sides were wearing their team’s strips for the very first time. While youngster Demi Gauci Maistre was making her debut for Kirkop United after she came through all youth ranks of the nursery, Mgarr United were boosted with the debuts of Amber Grech and Claudette Xuereb, both boasting an important career until now for both club and country.

The Greens started the match superior and were enjoying a good share of ball possession until their opponents started to gain metres on the pitch but their efforts took a blow when Mgarr United opened the score on the 15th minute through Rebecca D’Agostino. Debutant Amber Grech took charge of a dangerous set piece and with a precise delivery on D’Agostino’s head, the latter netted easily to put her team in front. Kirkop reacted with huge personality in the aim of equalizing the match but after missing a couple of open chances in front of Mgarr’s goalkeepers, Rachel Borg, Mgarr United doubled the score from a counter-attack. The other debutant Claudette Xuereb crossed from the flank and with her goal intuition Nikki Buttigieg netted to settle the score at 0-2.

The next 45 minutes saw Kirkop United bossing the game but their efforts went all in vain, merit to Mgarr United’s cautions defensive line. With the result ending 0-2 for Mgarr United, they have secure their first 3 points together with Birkirkara and Hibernians who all took maximum points from their opening encounters.

Under the new guidance of Shawn Meilak, Pembroke Athleta produced a very positive display but it was the other new coach, Jean Pierre Portanier Mifsud, who prevailed over him with Birkirkara getting their first 3 points of the season.

Pembroke Athleta started the match very strongly with a couple of occasions through Leanne Micallef but her efforts were wasted. Birkirkara started to impose their game as the time went by and were dangerous especially from set piece. On the 39th minute, it was Gabriella Zahra who headed the ball but her effort was cleared off the line but Pembroke could not do avoid the goal a couple of minutes later when Raina Giusti availed from a confusion in the box.

In the second half, both teams were cautious and the first action arrived from Pembroke Athleta through Leanne Micallef but Birkirkara’s defense was precise to clear in time. The Stripes tried to double the score but the post denied both Parnis and Campbell with the result ending at 1-0 for Birkirkara.

Champions Hibernians started their title’s defense with a 3-1 win over last year’s K/O runner up Raiders (Luxol). In a match which lacked excitement and offensive actions, the goals from Ylenia Carabott nd Ruth Steer Chetham were the main point of the encounter and which sealed the win for the Paolites. However, Raiders had their own occasions and the result does not reflect their performances as they were superior in ball possession in numerous occasions but they lacked precision in their finishing which eventually cost them the points.

Second Division

Gozo FC marked their return at senior level with a jubilant win over Tarxien Rainbows by 6-1.

It was the Rainbows though who shed the first blood with the opening goal after 16 minutes through Roxanne Busutill whom with a low shot she beat the goalkeeper. Chantelle Muscat almost doubled the score but her effort went inches wide. The Gozitans equalised the match through an unfortunate own goal by Tarxien’s goalkeeper Dorianne Grech. They turned the result to their favour on the 36th minute through a stupendous free kick from Maria Farrugia. Farrugia made it 3-1 few minutes after a couple of minutes after.

The next 45 minutes were calmer with Tarxien never really showing any intentions of being danger. Gozo extends their lead to 4-1 in the 80th minute through Joselene Gafa. Maria Farrugia sealed her personal hat trick by scoring the 5th goal while an own goal by Roxanne Busutill concluded the match in a trashing 6-1 win.

Mosta and Swieqi ended their second match of the season in a stalemate draw despite it was a very entertaining match. In the first half, both teams created a couple of efforts but no one could find the net, despite Swieqi being a bit more aggressive.

However, Swieqi were superior in the second half as they bossed the game throughout the 45 minutes but they could not penetrate Mosta’s young defensive line.

Kirkop B had a hard time in their second match of the season as they were outclassed by Hamrun Spartans with the latter scoring seven goals without a reply.

Hamrun Spartans secured the win by scoring three goals in the first half through Janice Kokavessis, Amanda Atkins and Christina Ortiz leaving no time to Kirkop to react.

In the second half, the Spartans increased their tempo and netted four times to end the score at 0-7 for last year’s Section B champions. A brace from Raissa Grixti and Amanda Atkins followed by a sole goal from Leona Gafa sealed the win for the Spartans.
