Another footballing season is expected to get under way on Saturday evening when Hamrun Spartans face last season’s surprise package Qormi FC.

Hamrun start as slight favourites against a Qormi side that has changed many faces in its fold. Hamrun are looking to build on the progress they registered last season following the introduction of 6 players including veteran David Camilleri. Qormi have lost last season’s foreign trio, top scorer, solid defender Ramon Dos Santos and Marsaxlokk bound Alfred Effiong. They made up for these losses by signing Matthew Bartolo, Jonathan Bondin, Stefan Giglio and last season’s championship winner George Mallia.

Saturday ’s biggest clash, will pit Hibernians against Floriana in a game that will be aired live on Melita’s Malta Stars channel. The Vilhena club have signed eight new players including Ivan Woods and Tyronne Farugia and after several seasons they are seeking a spot in next year’s European competitions. Meanwhile Hiberians who last year had a dismal season have strengthened their squad with four new foreign players, and although they sold Jonathan Caruana to Valletta, they have finally they find the right replacement for Terence Scerri in Paul McManus who has had an impressive pre-season.

On Sunday Tarxien Rainbows meet last season’s 1st Division Championship winners Marsaxlokk. Noel Coleiro’s men start the encounter favourites after securing five high profile Brazilians stars including 2009 runner-up top scorer Daniel Mariano Bueno. The Southsiders having returned to the Premier league by sign three foreigners including Julio Alcorse, and are looking to finish their season in the championship pool.

Title favourites Valletta will be aiming for the three points as they take on Vittoriosa Stars in their bid to win the championship after three seasons. The Capital have signed an all new foreign line up, with left back Ian Azzopardi and Jonathan Caruana giving coach Jesmond Zerafa the reinforcements he needed. Meanwhile the Stars are looking to battle bravely against relegation, securing some good foreign and local players to give a balance between experience and youth in their squad

Clash of the titans

Last season’s champions Birkirkara will be all out to claim the three points on Monday as they take on Sliema Wanderers at the National Stadium, with kick-off at 19:30.

Facing the Wanderers will definitely be a tricky task as the Blues have revamped their foreign lineup and added Steve Bezzina on loan from Valletta and up and coming midfielder James Paris. They have parted company with Ian Azzopardi and Ivan Woods in what looks like a transition year for Mark Marlow’s squad and this could well be the year for Mark Scerri and Miguel Ciantar to show their worth. Meanwhile the Stripes having enjoyed a good run in Europe signing three new foreigners, Gudja Striker Terence Vella and ex-Tarxien captain Andrew Decesare in the process

Many journalists still refer to Floriana Fc as the “Vilhena Club”. I would like to inform people who may not know, that Floriana FC have a lovely palace as their club premesis. This is situated on Misrah San Publiju, better known as The Graneries. I invite all journalists to visit this beautiful building.

Good luck to all teams, hope we have an enjoyable and exciting season. The teams look balanced and many surprises are bound to happen.

    Come on Greens!
