On a near perfect day with little wind and absolute sunshine the 80 participants fled the Bahar ic-Caghaq coast road to cover the distance as fast as they could. Perfectly organised by the Malta Cycling Federation the race was run smoothly as riders dashed by in their aerodynamic bikes and equipment. Starting as the clear favourite on the day, Bonello did not fail, as he started to increase his momentum lap after lap and crossed the line gasping for air following his effort. “It is very important to pace yourself” said Bonello, “something that I have learnt in all these years of racing”.

Bonello will now try take a chance at the Amateur World Time Trial Championships which will be held this Saturday at Occhiobello in Italy. “I have targeted this race for a while and planned to reach peak form specifically for this period, we’ll see how it goes, I hope I pull a good ride”, Bonello continued.

In the meantime, Marie Claire Aquilina (Greens) won the ladies race in 57:59 as Danica Bonello Spiteri edged closer in second place just 20 seconds behind Aquilina. Marica Micallef (Melita) also showed remarkable improvement to her time trialling to finish third in 59:41.

Up and coming Junior rider James Aquilina of Mosta AF Sign Studio clocked 53:53 followed by team mate Daniel Borg in 54:15 and Team Greens Bernard Azzopardi in 54:57.

George Abela (Qormi), George Gauci (Mosta) & Edwin Spiteri (Mosta) clocked 1:03:07, 1:05:22 & 1:06:57 respectively in the 60 plus category. Twanny Fenech (mosta) took the 50 plus race in 55:41 followed by team mate Emanuel Bezzina in 56:00 and Lino Fabri (Greens) in 56:32 despite suffering a puncture. The Masters class was taken in 55:43 by Michael Lia (Mosta) followed by Kevin Muscat (Qormi) in 56:14 and Jude Zammit (Mosta) in 56:21. A special reduced race was held for around 20 under fifteen riders. The next race will take place on the 23 May at ta Penellu By Pass. Start at 7:30am
