Over fifty riders took the start of the season opener with local clubs hailing their best riders for the event. The multiple laps around the 1.6km circuit in Qormi turned to be very spectator friendly who gathered around its perimeter to give support as riders dashed by. The main Elite race brought a lot of attention as it turned to be a very close battle for the top posts. Melita’s Maurice Formosa and Patrick Scicluna lead the standings in the initial part of the race with Qormi CC hopeful David Galea in a close third place just a split second from Scicluna. However Team Greens’ rider Etienne Bonello turned the result his way as he took off in the final part of the race. He pedalled his way right from the starting line to cover the distance in a record setting time of 22:58, Formosa moved to second in 23:36 with Scicluna in third in 23:47.

In the other categories Terrance Lauri (Team Greens) won the Junior race. Kevin Muscat (Qormi), Michael Lia (Mosta) and Joseph Bonello (Greens) topped the masters category. Donatelle Callus (Greens) was the fastest lady on the day, followed by Marica Micallef (Melita) and Marie Claire Aquilina (Greens). The Over fifty race went to Emanuel Bezzina (Mosta), followed by Charles Sammut (Greens) and Charles Zammit (Mosta). Anthony Borg (Qormi) was the first rider in the Over sixty category followed closely by Michael Polidano (Greens) and George Abela (Qormi). The Under fifteen boys race was won by Carl Xuereb(Mosta) with Nicholas Zammit (Mosta) and Edward Gatt(Greens) in second and third spot. Martina Sciberras (Mosta) was the fastest amongst the Under 15 girls followed by Nina Zammit (Mosta) and Veronica Sant (Mosta)

The race was made possible with the sponsorship of KIA motors, Express Trailers, The Cyclist and Pinto Band Club. Special appreciation goes to the Qormi Local Council, Qormi Police Station and the Malta Cycling Federation helpers and Officials. Next Cycle race will be held this Sunday at Zebbug Bypass organised by Mosta AF Sign Studio Cycling Club at 7:30am
