Sliema continue their unbeaten run with a hard fought victory

Sliema Wanderers continued their solid start to the campaign with a hard fought 1-0 victory against strugglers Birkirkara at the Corradino Stadium.

The Blues now moved to third place with eleven points from five games as the Stripes drop to sixth with seven points from five games and are on a three winless run as now more pressure pilesup on Birkirkara coach Patrick Curmi.

The all important goal was scored early in the second half by Nigerian striker Jeri Ani.

Since Danilo Doncic took control of the Blues last February he just suffered only one defeat against Hibernians last season.

Sliema mentor Danilo Doncic opted for a 4-4-2 formation as Nigerian striker Jeri Ani and Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza formed the forward line. The Blues were coming from a 2-2 draw against Marsaxlokk.

Birkirkara coach Patrick Curmi started an initial 4-4-2 formation as debutant Shola Haruna started alongside Spanish striker Avila Moises upfront. Birkirkara werecomimg from a 2-2 draw against Mqabba and were searching for a win after two games.

18min: A Rodrigo Pereira free kick from just outside the penalty area was off target.

30min: Trevor Cilia’s long shot was off target after a fine run by Joseph Zerafa.

Second Half

55min: Jerri Ani opened his Sliema goal account as he calmly lobbed the ball on Jorge Mora after he was served by captain Alex Muscat.

60min: Again Rodrigo Pereira free kick from just outside the penalty area hit the upright woodwork.

67min: Jorge Mora turns to a corner a Roderick Bajada diagonal free kick.

75min: Alex Muscat was close to second as his shot nearly skimmed the woodwork after a fine run.
