Without the services of Rowen Muscat but with the return from the start of Trevor Cilia, Birkirkara this evening tried to regain confidence and more points to keep up the pace with the league leaders.

Alan Tabone was making his return with a starting line up shirt whilst on the other hand Sliema welcomed back Obiefule also in their initial line up. Beppe Muscat was not in the eighteen man squad for the Blues.

The stripes were coming from a goalless draw against Tarxien in their last league match whilst Sliema had an identical result against Hibs in their last match. In the first round Birkirkara had beaten the Blues 4-1.

In an entertaining encounter both teams made thier utmost to end the match on the winning side but both keepers Akpan and Fraser denied more goals for the opposing teams respectively. Both coaches Zammit and Marlow had an identical approach to the game with a 4-2-3-1 game plan.

First Half:

10min: Mark Scerri’s shot from inside the area saved by Fraser.

13min: Ini Etim Akpan easily saves a Paul Fenech surprise shot from 45 meters.

15min: Emiliano Lattes’ header is saved by Akpan.

19min: Trevor Cilias’s cross was partially deviated by Soure almost in his own net.

23min: Sliema 1-0. Obinna Obiefule strikes a fine shot to beat Fraser.

24min: John Mintoff’s attempt from the left attacking zone almost gave a two goal lead to the Blues.

27min: Gatt Baldacchino extended foot inside the penalty area floors Alan Tabone and Referee Tonna awards a penalty for the Stripes.

28min: Birkirkara 1-1. Alan Tabone scores from the penalty spot on hit return from the start with his Club.

33min: Obinna Obiefule finds his way past Harding and Borg but his shot is inches wide from the bottom part of the upright.

35min: Shaun Bajada tries his luck from almost 35 meters but finds Akpan well placed to neutralize.40min: Akpan again is the protagonist as he saves on captain Galea’s insertion from the left.

43min: Birkirkara 2-1. A swirling cross shot by Alan Tabone beats a helpless Akpan to give the Stipes the lead.

45min: Birkirkara could have easily made them 3-1 as Cilia missed a great chance with a powerful shot.

Second Half:50min: Sliema 2-2. Mark Scerri converts an Obiefule assist to level the issue.

59min: Michael Galea shown a yellow card for what Referee Tonna considered to be a simulation by the B’kara captain, a decision that was followed by some tense moments with the stripes playes protesting heavily.

60min: Josef Mifsud sees his conclusion blocked by Fraser.

68min: Birkirkara manage to put the all into the net but goal was disallowed for an offside well signalled by Assistant Referee Alan Camilleri.

79min: Substitute Miguel Ciantar gets the opportunity to put Sliema in the lead but his left foot shot is too soft.
