Birkirkara St. Joseph’s national team triathlete Johanna Calleja, graduated with a distinction in Master of Science in Exercise & Nutrition Science from the University of Chester, United Kingdom.

The degree was carried out following the award of a Strategic Educational Pathways (STEPS) Scholarship (Malta). This scholarship is part-financed by the European Union – European Social Fund (ESF) under Operational Programme II – Cohesion Policy 2007-2013, “Empowering People for More Jobs and a Better Quality of Life”.

In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree, Calleja undertook research about the promotion of physical activity in general practice in Malta, by analysing Maltese general practitioners’ beliefs, attitudes and self-reported practices. It was found that such promotion is generally low, with the most common barrier being a lack of time. Knowledge about the physical activity recommendations was also found to be low. Initiatives are thus required to increase knowledge about the recommendations and physical activity promotion among Maltese General Practitioners.

This research could have important implications, particularly since physical inactivity and obesity levels are very high in Malta. Consequently, physical activity promotion by General Practitioners could have a significant public health impact, especially when one considers that a large proportion of the Maltese population visit a General Practitioner each year and that GPs are seen as a credible source of health information.
