Friday, March 5, 2010, 17:05

Whilst Paola Hibs Candy secured their top place in the First Division with a fine win against Fleur de Lys, the real thriller of last weekend was the top of the table clash in the 2nd Division between Birkirkara VC and Flyers Depiro II.

Prior to the playoffs, the points obtained until now will be halved, with the teams starting the playoffs much closer in the standings until now.

Ladies 1st Division
Paola Hibs Candy 3 Fleur de Lys 0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-22)

Paola obtained an important win against another top of the table team which strengthened their position at the top of the Ladies 1st Division league.

David Bonnici’s girls started out in their usual manner, taking to their opponents by storm, however Fleur de Lys withstood the early pressure to remain close to their opponents. However the latter lost their rhythm in the second set, with Paola whipping up a huge lead which they continued to administer till the end of the set.

The third one was very similar to the opening set, however Hibs Candy were too strong for Fleur de Lys to be able to stage any comebacks.

Women 2nd Div:
Birkirkara VC 3 Flyers Depiro II (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 26-24)

This was the thriller of the weekend, with the two top teams in the 2nd Division battling it out literally to the last point. In the first two matches of the season, Flyers had obtained two victories against the same Birkirkara, so it was vital for the latter to close up on their opponents prior to the Playoffs.

The match immediately showed that it was going to be a very tight one, however Birkirkara maintained a small advantage in the first two sets, going up to a 2-0 lead. Flyers Depiro continued playing well and with both teams playing at their very best, they managed to win the next set with the slightest of points difference. The fourth set could have gone either way, but Birkirkara managed to keep their cool and obtain three precious points.

Referees: Marvic Micallef, Maria Costa

TGIF 3 Mellieha Bullets 1 (25-8, 23-25, 25-17, 25-17)

Mellieha managed to win the first set of the season in their last match of the regular season campaign. On the other hand, TGIF edged closer to Phoenix in the 2nd Division standings and with the clash between the two this coming weekend, TGIF can catch up with their opponents and start the Playoffs on equal points.

TGIF started this match on the better side, however Mellieha improved much more in the second set and deserved to win it. But they could not keep up their tempo, and TGIF soon closed it down winning the next two sets.

Referee: Nadia Tagliaferro

Phoenix 0 Paola U/18 3 (20-25, 18-25, 19-25)

Paola found no difficulty in beating Phoenix 3-0, with the former closing their regular league commitments in style, and with Phoenix still having to battle it out in the clash against TGIF. Alesio Muscat’s girls showed they were the stronger outfit from beginning to end, and Phoenix found it very hard to obtain their points. Paola will now face Flyers Depiro II and Birkirkara VC in the Promotion Pool of the Ladies 2nd Division League.
