‘Big’ Joe Egan, the Irish Heavyweight Boxing Legend described by Mike Tyson as ‘The toughest white man on the planet,’ will be travelling to Malta to attend Friday’s night Boxing Spectacle being organised by the European Boxing Federation (EBF) in collaboration with local promoter Paul Borg.

Joe Egan was a Golden Gloves Champion with an impressive record of over 80 wins and 7 Irish titles to his name. While on a training trip to Atlantic City Joe was convinced by two times Heavyweight Champion, Floyd Patterson, to stay in the States to become a sparring partner for a promising new Heavyweight Boxer called Mike Tyson. Joe, then a 17 year-old, joined the Catskills Boxing Gym inNew York, where he lived and trained with Tyson for two years to become great sparring partners and lifelong friends.

Joe looks upon his win against World Heavyweight Champion Bruce Seldon in 1988 as his greatest achievement. He eventually signed pro in 1990 and won his first two fights; but his boxing dreams were cruelly shattered when he was forced to quit following a serious road accident on the night of his second professional fight.

6ft 1in modern day gladiator Egan had an action packed career, first as a Boxing Heavyweight, and later in roles of top Hollywood Blockbusters. One of his early ‘hard man’ movie appearances was in BBC’s One ‘Hustle’ but his big break came when renowned filmmaker Guy Ritchie chose him for a part in ‘Sherlock Holmes’ where he played ‘Big Joe’ a role he kept even in the film’s sequel ‘Sherlock Holmes 2′.  Joe has appeared in more than 25 movies including ‘Cass’, ‘Dead Man Running’ and ‘Freight’ to name but a few.

On thisMaltavisit Big Joe Egan will be the International Speaker of the European Boxing Federation delegation which will also include Spencer Brown and James Ward, Chairman and Secretary/Matchmaker respectively of the EBF.

These European Boxing Federation officials together with local spokespersons will be addressing a Press Conference before the weigh-in session of all the boxers in action.  This is being staged on Thursday 26th January at the Black Bull Pub in Dragonara Road Paceville at 2.30 p.m.

Meanwhile the whole programme of Friday’s Big Night of Boxing, which starts at 8.00 p.m., reads: Opening bout will be the supporting fight between local boxers, Brandon Borg and Keith Mills. This will be followed by five Malta-UK encounters made up of four two-minute sessions seeing Dione Galea vs Jordan Black, Etiene Spiteri vs Slinky Cumberlbach, Clayton Vella vs Scott Conners, Justin Grech vs Phill Worell and Tyrone Borg vs Dale Ball.

The highlight of the night will be the main bout between Maltese heavyweight Billy Corito, ‘the hit man’, and UK Ian Toby, an ex-professional with over 52 professional fights to his credit – a fight which will be made up of six three-minutes sessions.

In the meantime tickets selling at €25 (VIP) and €15 are still available from London Butcher (Gżira), Art of Fighting Kick Boxing Club (Fgura) and Boxway Fitness Centre (Msida).
