Betfair Sliema Stompers RFC raise over €8,000 for men’s health

Local rugby club BETFAIR Sliema Stompers have just launched their social awareness campaign which goes by the name of “Stompers Giving Back to the Community”. The club aims to seek opportunities, through sports and rugby in particular, to help make a difference in today’s society as well as supporting “off the field” worthy causes.

The Sliema Rugby Team have already organised and participated in fundraising events for causes which are close to their heart, such as the Angie Bajada Foundation and the rugby team decided to start this year’s season with a ‘Movember’ fundraising campaign. The Movember Foundation has transformed the month of November into a month of moustache growing in support of raising funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer. The Sliema rugby boys grew, groomed and trimmed their moustaches with great dedication and to great effect (as can be seen in the photo).

Sliema Stompers, together with their main sponsors Betfair, enthusiastically embarked on supporting the cause by enrolling in the UK’s formal campaign (currently there are formal Movember campaigns in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and Ireland).  The Stompers team was a walking, talking billboard for 30 days and through their actions and words the players raised awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health. The campaign was a resounding success and by the end of the month a total of €8,000 was collected through generous donations from the general public and other fund raising events dedicated to the cause. The good news does not stop there, Betfair – the Stompers main sponsor have matched the total sum collected by the club, bringing up the grand total to €16,000.

The funds raised are targeting the number one male specific cancer – prostate cancer. The money raised will be used to fund research and clinical trials to advance the understanding of prostate cancer, the development of drugs, treatments and tests and long-term care to improve the lives of men with prostate.

This achievement was only possible with the amazing support of all those who participated: family, friends and all those who took the opportunity to support the cause and help make a difference. Whilst Movember has come to an end, the Betfair Sliema Stompers RFC, are beginning their commitments on the rugby pitch in the various local competitions.  Until Movember 2012, look out for further activities of Betfair Sliema Stompers RFC both on and off the rugby field.
