Two Maltese tennis players who are taking part in the 11th edition of the European Youth Olympic Festival which is being held in Trabzon – Turkey were in on Wednesday 27th July. On the first day of competition they obtained different results.

The main draw consisted of 62 players and the first round winners had to play their second round match on the same
day. Bernard Cassar Torreggiani managed to win both his matches. In the first match he managed to beat Kevin Zonzini of San Marino 6-4 and 6-0.

Cassar Torreggiani in the first set raced to 5 games to 1 up and although Zonzini managed to win 3 games in a row, Malta’s player held his serve in the 10th game to win it 6-4. In the second set Zonzini could not match the tennis
craftiness of Cassar Torregiani.
In the second round Cassar Torreggiani played against the Italian player Riccardo Chessari. Although in the second set Chessari offered some form of resistance Cassar Torreggiani held his nerve and cool and won in straight sets
with the score of 6-2 and 7-5. In the first set he showed the upper hand by showing consistency in his baseline play and also by moving his opponent around the court with his variety of strokes. In the second set Chessari managed to turn the score in his favor from 4 games to 2 downto 5 games to 4. Here Cassar Torregiani showed great character by
winning 3 games in a row and also the match.

Raphael Sammut lost the first round match against Tal Goldengoren from Izrael with the score of 6-1, 6-0. This score is a bit cruel on Sammut part because, he managed to produce solid ground strokes from the base line. But one can say that it wasn’t Raphael’s day because he always ended on the losing side in long rallies.
