The first ever National Senior Championships were held by the Malta Tenpin Bowling Association at the Eden SuperBowl recently, thereby creating brand new national category in the discipline of tenpin bowling in Malta. The Championships were open to bowlers of 50yrs of age or more, and separate male and female competitions were held.

Emulating a number of international senior events including the SuperBowl’s Senior Open Championships, a handicapping system was applied which awards extra game points to bowlers depending on their age, with those aged 50 – 56 years playing on a ‘scratch’ basis, bowlers of 57 receiving one bonus pin per game, two pins for a 58yr old, and so on up to a maximum of 15 pins per game.

The Championships were held over a six-game session, with simple total pinfall including bonus deciding the inaugural male and female champions.

In the ladies division it was Josephine Borg who claimed the honours. Her scratch total of 995 pins was boosted by twelve bonus pins for a 1007 gross total, a mere two pins ahead of scratch bowler Marianne Mula in second place. Josephine Bonello took third on a 927 total, ahead of fourth placed Doris Zammit in fourth place.

Benny Hili is the 2010 National Senior Champion. Bowling scratch, his 1178 tally staved off tough competition from true veteran Roy Swift, in second place on a 1131 gross total. Leli Baldacchino placed third on 1114 pins, while John Balani came in fourth on 1094.
