Basketball national team coaches choose their squads

The Maltese women's basketball team on the GSSE podium in Cyprus last year

In preparation for the next FIBA Europe Division C championships the National coaches called up the players from whom then they will decide the final 12. Both set of teams are currently training on a daily basis.

The women’s competition will be held in Azerbaijan between the 28th June and the 3rd July 2010 where the Maltese National team will be defending the gold medal won in Luxembourg 2 years ago. Coaches Santino Coppa and Sandro Farrugia will select the squad from the following players:

Elena Cassar, Steffi De Martino, Josephine Grima, Leanne Sciberras, Kirsten Micallef, Christina Grima, Rebecca Brincat Thoresen, Joselle Cardona, Emma Moore, Beverlee Zammit, Ashleigh Vella and Antoinette Borg.

The Men’s competition will be held in Malta between the 5th and 10th July 2010. Head coach Bruno Di Pietrantonio will be selecting his side from the following list of players:

Peter Shoults, Roderick Vella, Godfrey Gauci, Isaac Tanti, David Bugeja, Jean Paul Schembri, Nigel Sultana, Darryl Joshua Jackson, Tom Paris, Jean Paul Bonnici, Anton Axiaq, Dirk Schembri, Kristin Baldacchino, Billy Zammit, Addison Bonnici, Michael Naudi, Steve Schembri and Samuel Deguara.

    Coach Santino should concentrate more on the national team that poaching players to register with HIS local team. It is a shame that the local MBA closes both eyes in such manouvers.
