Barbara lands in Carolina

Maltese forward Etienne Barbara has arrived in the United States to begin his new football adventure with USSF Division 2 club Carolina Railhawks. The club had signed him up from Maltese champions Hibernians at the end of February.

Railhawks coach Martin Rennie had words of praise for the 27-year old Barbara. “This guy is really, really good. I made the decision to go watch him play, and I was blown away by what he did. I’m hoping that will translate to our league, and I believe it will. He’s got pace, power and he can finish and he’s just an all-around player. He’ll add a lot to our squad” he said.

Following his arrival in Carolina on Wednesday, Barbara immediately settled into his new training routine with his first session being at the WakeMed Soccer Park on Thursday morning.

In his first comments to the Railhawks’ official website following his 24-hour journey, Barbara said “I am pretty tired at the moment and I have to get my fitness back, but it’s fantastic out here,” he said. “You don’t find this back home. The weather is fantastic, the facility is great. I am very happy to be here.”

Things didn’t start too well though, “They had to change the wheel for the first plane, and I had a two-hour delay, so I lost the first flight to Philadelphia from Rome. I had to spend 24 hours in Rome and I came in last night. I’ve had a lot of check-in. I’ve never done so many check-ins in my life. Now I’m happy that I’m here.”

Barbara was also impressed by the facilities available at the team’s disposal, “I was expecting something like this,” Barbara said. “When Martin came over to my country, he showed me some photos of the facilities. Seeing it in real life, it’s better.”

His final comments following his first training session were positive, “These are pretty good players, they press high and the game is quick,” he said. “This is what I was looking for. I hope we can combine it with some good football.”
