The Bank of Valletta football team was crowned champion of the first edition of the Champions Bank 2014 football tournament held in Belgrade.

‘Champions Bank 2014’ saw the participation of twenty teams from amongst Banks, Bank Insurances and Financial Institutions.

Within the first phase, Bank of Valletta placed second in Group D with a 3-0 victory over Generali PBZ (Croatia) and after overcoming CNP Vita (Italy) 2-1. The BOV team drew against Fideuram (Italy) and Deutsche Bank (Germany).

A 1-0 victory against BSI Switzerland in the quarter-final led to a semi-final against Unicredito (Serbia) which BOV won through a penalty shoot-out through which it gained access to the final where it faced Deutsche Bank.

The match again resulted in a draw following regular time and again the BOV team was faced with a penalty shoot-out where BOV prevailed with a score of 3-2.

The Champions Bank tournament also had a social dimension to it, with the organising committee donating 5 euros to the Ana and Vlade Divac Foundation for every goal scored. This is a non-profit organisation set up by the legendary basketball player Vlade Divac of the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Bank of Valletta team was composed of Rudy Briffa, Stephen Mizzi, Chris Penza, Sandro Bonnici, Joseph Zammit, Andrew Scerri, Keith Mifsud, Ian Darmanin, Andreas Galea, Ryan Darmanin and coaches Frans Cassar and Clayton Garzia. Accompanying the group were committee members Joe Baldacchino, Mario Falzon, kit manager Justin Schembri and BOV official Kenneth Micallef.

This is not the first international success for the Bank of Valletta football team having previously won the international Mastercard Tournament.
