Bajada wins two more titles in Italy

National champion Daniel Bajada continued to dominate proceedings on the fourth day at the Cervia International Table Tennis Festival by winning both the singles and doubles competiton during the fourth edition of the Edoardo Rossi Memorial.

In the singles event Bajada, seeded no. 1, powered himself into the last 16 with three fine 3-0 victories in the group stage followed by another 3-0 win against Stefano Zaghini to make it to the quarter finals.

In the last eight Bajada had the better of Alberto Caroni 3-1 while later he assured himself of a place in the final by defeating Lorenzo Godio 3-1.

In the final Bajada had a rather slow start losing the first set against Alberto Cerquiglini however he was quick to rediscover his fine form by clinching three consecutive sets to make sure of his third singles title at the festival.

Fellow Maltese players Christopher Portelli and Mikael Debono both suffered three defeats each in the group stages.

In the doubles event Bajada teamed up with Roberto Gazzoni once again. Seeded as no. 1 following their Cervia International Open victory on Thursday, the pair made quick work of Maltese pair Portelli and Debono 3-0 in the quarter finals followed by a 3-1 victory over Vivo and Catelli in the semi finals.

The final proved to be a much tighter affair as Bajada and Gazzoni were made to fight much harder than expected to finally overcome Ticca and Cerquiglini’s stern challenge 3-2.

Earlier on Portelli and Debono defeated Vinetti and Marchese 3-1 in the last 16 round.
