Buoyed by his success as Young Athlete of the Year during last week’s Sportmalta Awards l-Ghazliet Sportivi Nazzjonali, Maltese international player Daniel Bajada continued to leave his mark in Italian table tennis circles when on Saturday afternoon he participated in a ranking tournament open for Category 3 players in Casamassima, Bari.

In the singles event Bajada got off to an excellent start in the group stages beating Levon Zakaryan 3-1 and obtaining identical 3-0 triumphs against Massimiliano Di Giuseppe and Vincenzo De Angelis respectively. In the knock out stage Bajada registered two narrow 3-2 victories against Corrado Mastroianni and Sandro Sicali until finally being eliminated by no. 192 Mattia Galdieri 3-1 in the quarter finals.

In the doubles event Bajada teamed up with ASD Fiaccola team mate Domenico Diciolla. The pair managed to reach the semi finals after beating Mastroianni and D’Amico 3-0 and Bozza and Montaperto 3-2 in the previous rounds. However, the pair did not manage to get through to the final after losing 3-0 to Alessandrino and Galdieri.

Next weekend Bajada will be back in Italy when his Serie B1 side ASD Fiaccola host ACSD Sant’Espedito Napoli after losing to runaway leaders ASD Tennistavolo Norbello 5-1 during their last outing.
