Depiro Flyers and Attard Tenovar claimed a place in the Ladies and Men’s Fr. Parnis National Cup finals respectively when they beat Southend and Aloysians in the semi-finals.

Depiro Flyers – Southend 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-19)

Depiro flyers managed to get to their third consecutive cup final after defeating Southend in three straight sets.

Depiro were missing three regular players but they managed to play on their habitual level and it was only at the end of the second set that Depiro lost some of their momentum after leading the early and middle parts of the set.

For Depiro, there was a solid defensive performance by libero Lindsay Cordina, while Mariella Zahra and Amanda Agius continued to show progress as the season is coming to its most critical phase.

Attard Tenovar – Defenders Aloysians 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17)

On Sunday new comers Attard Tenovar surprised Defenders to book a place in the Men’s National Cup Final.

Before the start of the game the odds were completely against the new comers with Defenders having placed second in last year’s National League.

However Attard showed good team work from the initial moments of the game and made their intention clear.

Ably led by captain and setter Ian Wright and libero Joe Casha, Attard closed the first set in just over 20 minutes with the score reading 25-16.

The second set was more balanced with Defenders’ experienced central player Ron Stivala making his presence felt in the first part of the set.

However Attard managed to turn the set around with Darren Bugeja being instrumental to win the set 25-22.

A balanced third set saw Defenders’ duo Gordon Cachia and Alex Cassola making the most of Mark Soler’s setting and closed the set at 25-23, despite Attard’s attempt to make a comeback.

However the final set was all in Tenovar’s favour. Patrick Felice Pace’s experience and Omar Tanti’s spirit were instrumental to outshine their opponents.

Attard closed the set 25-17 and the game to the surprise of local volleyball enthusiasts.
