ASMK Ladies Demolition Derby’s 2nd edition on Sunday

Thursday, February 13, 2020, 10:36

Next Sunday, ASMK (Assoċjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi) will continue their autocross events and the second Ladies Car Demolition at the ASMK Race Complex in Ta’ Qali. Sunday’s activity start at 10 am and the Ladies Demolition Derby is expected to start at around 3 pm.

In this second edition of the Ladies Car Demolition Derby, 7 entrants are registered to this challenge. Although this number of competitors is slightly less than that of last year the entrants are strongly prepared to undertake this challenge. These female competitors will be competing on cars not longer than 4 meters (13 ft). The Association is holding this event purposely to appeal for more participation of women in Motorsport. Some years back the ASMK had several other activities dedicated only to women but these activities were cut for lack of participation after a long while.

Meanwhile, last Sunday’s ASMK’s event was a continuation of the event which was forced to be cancelled on Sunday 16th January 2020, due to heavy rain downpour during the event.

In Class A, Karl Micallef on his Opel Corsa dominated the three qualifying Heats and won the highest qualifying points thus he secured his place in the final. The other five competitors who qualified with Micallef were Andrew Pisani on an Opel Nova, Noel Zammit on a Fiat Punto, Ivan Birmingham on his Opel Corsa, Jean Paul Grech on his Peugeot 106 and Kurt Aquilina on his Opel Corsa.

In the final, Micallef again took the lead and at the end of his first lap he took the Joker Lap and gave the lead to Grech, while he was being followed by Pisani and Aquilina. The race final went on when the other competitors took the Joker Lap, while Grech continued leading the pack followed by Micallef and Zammit.

But in the fifth lap, Pisani, Micallef and Grech retired because of mechanical breakdowns to their respective cars. The race final went on and ended with Zammit winning his first race final of this season. Zammit was followed by Kurt Aquilina and Ivan Birmingham respectively. Micallef and Grech came fourth and fifth, while Pisani finished in sixth place because he was the first one who withdrew from the final race.

The Modified Autocross Class B’s Final was won by Justin Buttigieg on his Opel Nova and followed by Paul Formosa on a Fiat Uno.
