Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi was very busy over the weekend both locally and abroad. Four Motocross riders were competing in the FMI Motocross Championship in Noto inSicily while the Autocross Finals of the 21st October were held last Saturday 17th November at Ta Qali.

The Class B Finals were run between 4 competitors because two cars had retired before the re-run was established. Mario Scicluna on his Opel Corsa made a perfect Start though closely followed by Philip Vella on another Corsa. Also, right from the beginning of this race Malcolm Borg on another Opel was pushing hard on Guzi Pace’s Escort Mk1 and succeeded in overtaking him right at the end of the first lap. Borg held this position and the pressure now created by Pace right to the Finish Line of the 9 lap race. Scicluna took the Finish Flag ahead of Vella, Borg and Pace.

The Line-Up for the National Autocross Championship race was composed of Matthew Borg (Opel Nova), Vince Farrugia on a VW Polo, Josef Grech on a Fiesta, Carmel Mifsud on a Hillman Imp and Christian Galea on a Fiat Ritmo. As expected, its difficult to beat the Imp’s launch from the Standing Start and Mifsud took the lead while he was closely followed by Galea and Farrugia. Soon Galea closed the gap and took the lead over Mifsud. Yet, a few seconds from the start, Borg was forced to retire on the track due to a fault on his car’s front wheel. Soon after, Farrugia also retired due to an accident on the track. All this resulted in Galea’s winning full race points. He was followed by Mifsud and Grech respectively.

Motocross riders Clayton Camilleri and Paul Muscat both on KTM Motorcycles and Stefan Dimech on his Honda together with Aidan Cilia La Corte were in Noto racing their machines in one of the Italian Federation Motocross Championship races. Clayton, Stefan and Paul compete in the highly competitive class namely the ‘MX2-Over 21’ class. The Qualifying Heat on the 1.2Km per lap track lasted 20 laps when all riders battle for the best Pole Position. Also in competition on the track they find the elite ‘MX1-Over 21’ class riders too.

Yet, following the two timed Heats Clayton Camilleri won a podium 3rd place in his class. Paul Muscat also on a KTM machine was 4th in class. Dimech was forced to retire due to an aching leg during the first Heat. Francesco Greco and Salvatore Italia both on Honda’s won 1st and 2nd resp.

Aidan competed in a different class namely in the ’New MX2-Over 17’. Aidan who has just started his racing in the FMI championship is heading high to reach the level of fellow riders on FMI soil. ASM is also heading to have a to have the first Juniors to join the Maltese ASM Team challenging for the FMI silverware.
