APS U17 Sec B – Greens retain second place

After this victory against Zabbar Floriana lie in second spot n 28 points from 12 games and a draw from their last game against Balzan will suffice for promotion to Section a for next season.

 

Floriana created the first two actions. Russell Cauchi, grandson of the famous Tony, released Martin Caruana on the right flank who after advancing executed a perfect cross but found no takers to apply the killer touch and Cauchi was then fouled on the right flank and after the free kick by Jake Davies, Zabbar keeper Liam Lagana partly saved a shot by Neil Tabone and the ball was cleared away,

 

Zabbar reacted by mounting two actions. Emmanuel Mbong dribbled past an opponent on the right flank and Floriana keeper Tyrone Gauci neutralized the ball from his cross and Gilbert Testaferrata was fouled on the right flank and the ball missed the near post from the free kick by Mbong.

 

Floriana forged ahead in the 21st minute when Larson Azzopardi served Andre’ Cutajar with a long throw-in from the left flank and he scored with a hard grounder from just outside the area.

 

Zabbar created another action when Mbong was fouled outside the area and Christian Dalli drove over the bar from the free kick.

 

Floriana created two further actions before the half time whistle. Mauro Sultana dribbled past an opponent, served Cutajar with a square pass and Lagana saved his shot from outside the area and the same player then dribbled past an opponent on the left flank and after crossing the ball in the area to Juan De Giorgio the latter drove over the bar.

 

The first two actions after the restart were both created by Floriana. Cutajar was fouled just outside the area and the free kick by Caruana created havoc in Zabbar’s are but somehow the ball was cleared away to safety and Neil Spiteri released Caruana in the area and Lagana saved his close-range shot.

 

Zabbar then won a free kick on the right flank as Mbong was fouled and from the free kick by Waylon Grech the ball was cleared to a corneer.

 

In the 61st minute Lagana brought the house down with a very good save as he tipped the ball over the bar after a hard drive from just outside the area by De Giorgio.

 

The Yellow?Blacks kept insisting and won a corner kick on the left flank which was taken by Grech and after the ball was partly cleared outside the area Sean Pace Briffa drove over the bar.

 

Floriana doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Neil Tabone was fouled in midfield and as Jake Davies floated a high ball in the area from the free kick it created havoc in Zabbar’s area and Tabone scored with a tap-in.

 

In another action by Floriana Caruana released Cutajar in the area and Lagana foiled him with a timely sortie.

 

Just before the final whistle Zabbar won a free kick as substitute Gordie Mifsud was fouled outside the area and Gauci saved the free kick shot by substitute Jake fakzon.
