APS U 15 Sec A – St Andrews relegated

St Andrew are relegated to Section B for next season as they only won 11 points from 13 games while Paola H managed to retain SectionA status as they managed to win 19 points from 13 games in the new league format for this season.

 

Paola were the first to threaten as the created three actions in a row. Timothy Xuereb served Owen Magro with a square pass and Melita keeper Dunca Formosa saved his effort from outside the area. Nigel Galea was fouled outside the area and from the free kick by Gary Camilleri , Formosa saved a header by Magro and Magro then released Keane Lagana in the area and Formosa foiled him with a timely sortie as he dived at his feet and smothered the ball.

 

In the first action by St Andrew in the 13th minute they opened the score. Adam Magri Overend dribbled past an opponent on the right flank and served Steven Camilleri with a low cross in the area who scored with a low drive past Paola keeper Mikhael Magri.

 

In the 18th minute Paola came very close to restore parity. Derwin Pace dribbled past three defenders on the left flank and the ball was cleared to a corner from his cross. The flaf kick was taken by Gary Camilleri and the ball was cleared on the line from a shot from inside the area by Isaac Falzon.

 

The Paolites kept insisting and mounted two more actions. Gary Camilleri served Magro with a square pass and Formosa saved his effort from outside the area and after Daneel abela was fouled on the right flank the ball was cleared away with difficulty from the free kick by Falzon.

 

St Andrew doubled their lead in the 24th minute as Malcolm Vella dribbled past an opponent and set Modafar Bitrou free in the area who scored with a hard low drive.

 

Paola then won a free kick outside the area after Magro was fouled and after Camilleri floated a high ball in the area from the free kick Falzon drove over the bar.

 

St Andrew created the last action before the break when Magri Overend was fouled on the right flank and the ball was cleared away with difficulty from the free kick by the same player.

 

Very few were the actions worthy of note after the resumption.

 

Paola reduced the gap in the 43rd minute as substitute Nicholas Fava dribbled past two opponents and after entering the area he scored with a hard low drive.

 

In the 51st minute St Andrew were denied by the wood work when Vella released Marcus Grima on the right flank who after advancing the ball hit the far post with Magri beaten and finished out of play, na din another action by St Andrew a flag kick by Magri Overend created havoc in Paola’s area but the ball was somehow cleared away to safety.

 

Three minutes before the end Paola managed to obtain an equaliser when Magri floated a high ball in the area from a free kick and Gary Camilleri scored with a header, and just before the final whistle they came very close to snatch a winner as substitute Kurt Zammit released Andre’ Falzon Kirby in the area and the ball missed the upright from his low hard drive with Formosa beaten.
