APS Bank Under 17 Section B

Kirkop     0

Balzan     3

Balzan were the much better outfit in this game as they created much more chances than Kirkop. They now lead the standings on 21 points from 8 games, two more than Floriana but the latter have a game in hand. So superior were Balzan as Kirkop managed only four shots, three of which came from free kicks, during the 80 minutes of play, and  their keeper Eman Grech saved them from a much heavier defeat with very good saves.

After only six minutes Balzan opened the score as Gianfranco Micallef released Paul Lapira in the area and he scored with a hard drive in the roof of the net, and minutes later they were denied by the woodwork: Luke pace dribbled past an opponent on the left flank who then served Shaun Spiteri in the area and from his shot the ball hit the base of the upright and ended in Grech’s waiting hands.

Balzan resumed with their pressing. Lapira served Corbolan with a square pass and he missed the upright from outside the area. From a well-taken flag kick by Lapira, Courage Oneruanzoje missed the upright by inches with a header. Oneruanzoje released Lapira on the left flank who after entering the area missed the bar by inches,  and in the last action before the break Micallef was fouled outside the area Grech had to dive and save the free kick shot by Sean Cipriott.

Kirkop created the first action after the restart when Kursten Bugeja was fouled outside the area and after the free kick by Luca Mizzi, Balzan keeper Mikhail Sciberras had to dive and save the ball to a corner from a close-range shot by Kursten Farrugia.

In a reaction by Balzan, Paul Lapira was fouled outside the area and after the free kick by the same player Grech saved an over-head kick by Juan Corbolan, at the other end, Kursten Farrugia was fouled just outside the area and from Mizzi’s free kick the ball was blocked by the defensive barrier.

The dominance by Balzan persisted. Jamie Zerafa was fouled outside the area and Cipriott missed the bar by inches from the free kick and Corbolan released Micallef in the area and Grech saved his shot in two attempts.

The score became 2-0 in the 63rd minute as Lapira served Corbolan with a square pass just outside the area and he scored with a hard grounder, and hardly a minute later they scored No 3 when Micallef received the ball from a long clearance, entered the area and despite being harassed by two opponents he managed to scored with a hard rising shot.

In a rare action by Kirkop Kursten Farrugia was fouled on the left flank and from Mizzi’s free kick the ball was headed away.

Balzan then created the last action before the end when Corbolan released Oneruanzoje in the area and he drove out when well-placed.
