Mosta   2

Sliema W    1

Mosta lead the standings on 8 points from 4 games while Sliema are on 7 points from same number of games. The strong wind at Rabat Ground rendered ball control very difficult but both teams did not resort to high balls but based their attacks and moves by playing the ball on the ground. The first half was dominated by Mosta as they had the wind behind their backs and Sliema did like-wise after the resumption.

The game was only three minutes old when and Mosta were already in the driving seat as they opened the score after a choral move between three players. Kyle Gatt released Brandon Abela on the right flank who in turn crossed to Kurt Camilleri in the area who scored with a low drive past Siema keeper Timothy Aquilina.

Encoraged by such an early lead Mosta created two more actions. Jurgen Grech entered the area after dribbling past four opponents only to be disposed by a fifth opponent and Neil Frendo pounced on a loose ball outside the area and Aquilina saved his effort from the distance.

In the 8th minute Mosta were awarded a penalty when Luca Gatt set Abela through in the area and he was tripped by the on-rushing Aquilina. Kurt Camileri took charge of the spot kick and Aquilina managed to get his finger tips to his rising shot and the ball hit the under-part of the bar and as the kicker followed the progression of the ball he scored but the referee disallowed the goal judging that Camilleri fouled Aquilina.

In the 15th minute Mosta doubled their lead as they won a corner kick on the left flank and after the ball was partly cleared from the flag kick by Jurgen Grech, Kyle Gatt scored with a hard drive from the rebound, and hardly a minute later they came very close a third goal as Kurt Camilleri released Abela in the area and as Aquilina came out of his charge to narrow the angle he tried his luck with a lobbed ball but a defender appeared in the nick of time to clear the ball away to safety.

Despite the handicap of the wind Sliema managed to created the last three actions before the break. Daniel Curmi served Miguel Mifsud with a cross from the right flank but he drove over the bar when well-placed in the area. Michele Sansone then dribbled past an opponent outside the area and the ball missed the upright following his hard grounder and the same palyer the entered the area after beating a defender and Mosta keeper Claudio Carabott turned his shot to a corner.

Four minutes after the restart Sliema narrowed the gap Omar Elouni out-sped a defender on the right flank and crossed the ball in the area to Miguel Mifsud who scored with a hard low drive, and hardly a minute later at the other end after a corner kick from the left flank by Neil Frendo the ball was cleared to another corner.

Sliema then regained the initiative and created four actions. Andrea Martinelli released Miguel Mifsud with a high through ball in the area and Carabott saved his header. After a Martinelli flag kick from the right flank Kurt Shaw headed slightly over the bar.Daniel Curmi was then fouled on the right flank by Clyde Borg who was shown a yellow card, and the ball was headed away for the free kick by Shaw and Martinelli served Curmi with a square pass outside the area and Carabott saved his hard low drive.

In a Mosta counter-attack eight minutes before the end of normal time Frendo released Abela in the area but he drove out from a very ideal position, and he last action before the end was created by Sliema when Zack Mifsud was fouled outside the area and Carabott saved the free kick shot by Sansone.
