The sizeable crowd present at the Rabat Ground were regaled with a fast and entertaining game. Paola H managed to turn tables over their opponents after suffering an early first half goal and managed to win by the odd goal in five and they are now joint leaders with Pieta on 8 points from 4 games and the Stripes are in second place on 7 points from same number of games.

The Stripes were the better outfit during the first period and Paola H were a transformed side after the resumption as they created much more actions than Birkirkara.

The game was only two minutes old when Birkirkara opened the score when from a well-taken flag kick from the right flank by Kyle Mifsud, Nicholas Farrugia rose above friend and foe and headed the ball past Paola keeper Ryan Vella, and encouraged by such an early lead they resumed with their pressing and mounted two more actions. Farrugia set Ryan Tonna free in the area and the ball missed the upright from his hard low drive and Tonna served Farrugia with a short corner pass from the left flank who after crossing the ball in the area Ayrton Attard headed just over the bar.

In a reaction by Paola they mounted three actions. Nicholas Fava served Andrei Spiteri with a through ball in the area and as Stripes keeper Clyde Aquilina came out of his charge to narrow the angle he tried his luck with a lobbed ball but Braden Calleja was on hand to clear the ball away to safety. Matthew Portelli served Spiteri with a through ball who then released Jon P Seychell in the area and Aquilina foiled him with a perfect timely sortie and Fava set Spiteri free on the right flank and the ball was headed away following his dangerous cross.

The Yellow/Reds regained the initiative and mounted three actions before the halftime whistle. Karl Caruana released Attard on the left flank who after dribbling past an opponent the ball was cleared to a corner from his cross and from the flag kick by Tonna Hibs keeper Ryan Vella neutralized the ball. Attard then dribbled past two defenders outside the area and Vella was able to save his feeble shot and Caruana served Zak Grech with a cross from the right flank but he drove slightly over the bar from inside the area.

The first three actions after resumption were created by Paola. Substitute Paul Mbong served Spiteri with a through ball in the area and Aquilina foiled him as he dived at his feet and smothered the ball. Jean P Baldacchino released Portelli in the area and he drove slightly off target and Kane Bonello served Fava with a through ball outside the area and Aquilina saved his effort in two attempts.

In the 40th minute Paola restored equilibrium as Mbong served Spiteri with a through ball on the edge of the area and scored with a lobbed ball, and in the first action by Birkirkara two minutes later a flag kick from the right flank by Kyle Mifsud created havoc in Paola’s area and the ball was somehow cleared away to safety.

The Paolites resumed with their pressing. Bonello controlled a loose ball outside the area and Aquilina saved his effort, the same player then released Spiteri in the area and  he drove slightly out and Mbong dribbled past an opponent on the edge of the area and Aquilina saved his shot.

In the 57th minute Paola scored a secong goal when Bonello served Spiteri with a through ball in the area and he scored with a hard low drive, and four minutes later the score became 3-1 as from a flag kick from the left flank by Fava the ball was partly cleared and as it came in the path of Mbong he scored with a hard and low diagonal shot past a helpless Aquilina.

Birkirkara reduced the gap two minutes before the end of normal time as Caruana served substitute Carlo Zammit Lonardelli with a square pass outside the area and he scored with a hard rising shot.

In the first minute of added time Paola created another action when substitute Dylan Camilleri released Mbong in the area and the ball missed the upright from his hard drive and in the fifth minute of added time Spiteri was fouled on the right flank and Aquilina saved the free kick shot by Fava.
