Considered as one of the toughest tournaments in the FISTF Calendar, the Major of Mons is the first one out of five similar tournaments till the end of the season on August 31st.

On March 5th and 6th, nine players from Malta participated in this tournament defending both the Maltese colours on individual basis and also their club’s names in the team competition. The Maltese contingent heading for Belgium on Friday 4th was formed by Massimo Cremona (F.lli Bari Reggio Emilia), Hansel Mallia and Joseph Mifsud (Fiamme Azzurre), Mark Gauci and Derek Conti (Atlas FTC), Angelo Borg (Pireaus Lions),Mario Camilleri, Alfred Fenech and Jason Pisani (Valletta SC).

In the teams category, the only club from Malta, Valletta Subbuteo Club had to start their matches with a handicap as they were only three to form the team. Lucky to find Brussles SC in the draws who had the same situation on the day. The other team in the group, the Belgians Rochefort TS ’A’ lost the direct match against their native country team. Valletta managed to get a draw against Brussels SC, who eventually got qualified with four points in the table. In this match, the good performance by Mario Camilleri against Vanton was the compensation for the game lost by Jason Pisani to the ex-World Champion Gil Delogne. Alfred Fenech, after a number of years returned to the pitch to pick up a draw against Laurent Coucke, President of the Belgian Federation. Against Rochefort TS, the Maltese team lost 3-1, with Mario Camilleri the only one to win his match against Brach.

Champions League winners 2010, F.lli Bari Reggio Emilia with whom the Maltese player, winner of the SportMalta Award last January, Massimo Cremona is registered had no difficulties in qualifying from group 4 against two Belgian teams, namely Templeuve United and Rochefort TS ’B’. In the first match, Cremona was not on the line up and his team won 3-0. The second match against Rochefort was a glory match for Cremona signing 7-0 and investing in the 3-1 win of Reggio Emilia.

Mark Gauci and Derek Conti, registered with the Greek team Atlas FTC and winners of the Europa League 2010 had great performance in group 11 to help their team qualify and winning the group. Against the Danish side of Lega Liga Odense, Mark Gauci had a convincing 6-0 win while Conti managed a draw. The club from Greece won the match 3-0. In the second match, against the Belgian side of Stembert ’B’ both Maltese players gained a wonderful win for their team.

The other side, with which their were Maltese players in Mons, the Italian’s Fiamme Azzurre fresh from the winter title of the Serie B Championship in Italy, had a great weekend till they reached the final. Joseph Mifsud and Hansel Mallia performed well in the group against Hennuyer ’D’ with two wins and against the French side of FTC Issy the game lost by Hansel Mallia against Vivron was compensated by a 2-0 win of Mifsud against French man Eric Naszalyi. This lead Fiamme Azzurre to the second round, before they can reach the last 16. Opposition from Stembert SC ’B’ was practically halted from both Maltese players by being the only two to win for their club and hence achieving a final score of 2-0.

In the last 16 phase, the Italian side Fiamme Azzurre had to play against the Belgian team of Brussels SC. Fiamme Azzurre won this game with an ease of efforts, 4-0 and the passport to the quarter finals was an easy one to achive. The other Italian side, for which Massimo Cremona plays, Reggio Emilia had to qualify only thanks to the difference in goals after a two all draw. Against JSC Rochefort, the Italian side lost two matches but the difference in goals was the qualifying factor. The Greek side of Atlas beat Rochefort TS 3-0 in the last 16 with Gauci and Conti achieving a 5-1 and 4-3 wins for their side.

The quarter finals, from the Maltese aspect was not an ideal situation. The side of Massimo Cremona had to face Atlas FTC of Gauci and Conti. The experience of the Italian side combined with a drop in the performance of the Greek team led to a 3-1 win for Reggio Emilia, with both Conti and Gauci losing their matches. Once again, for Fiamme Azzurre the Maltese players Mallia and Mifsud compensated for each other. This time Mallia won 2-1 to compensate for Mifsud lost game with same score. Fiamme Azzurre gained a 2-2 draw against Stembert ’A’, but the goals in favor were in a plus for the Italian side and therefore they qualified with the last four.

Semifnals offered the possibility to see in the final two sides with Maltese players. This was so thanks to the win of Reggio Emilia who won against the team of Hennuyer and Fiamme Azzurre beating their derby opposition of Bologna. In the final, the experience of Reggio Emilia was once again too much powerful for the Italian Serie B team, although one must highligh the match that Mallia had against World Class Carlos Flores, with the Maltese player losing 1-0 and also too much opportunities to equalise.

Fil-fazi tal-individwali, s-success Malti kompla jikkonferma li dan l-isport huwa wiehed fejn il-Maltin ghamlu success wara iehor. Fil-kategorija Under 19, Angelo Borg ftit gimghat wara r-rebh tal-GP Franciz irnexxielu jirbah dan it-titlu u jillawrja ruhu bhala wiehed mill-players promettenti u ta’ futur f’pajjizna. Wiehed irid isemmi ukoll, li Angelo Borg qed juri miljorament kontinwu d-dedikazzjoni tieghu lejn dan l-isport qed tkun wahda kontinwa u b’sagrificcji kbar, minkejja li qed ikompli bl-istudji tieghu bhala xhieda li dan l-isport ma’ jtellifx anqas mill-koncentrazzjoni tal-iskola.

On Sunday, during the individual competitions, Maltese players had their say in almost all categories. In the Open category, Massimo Cremona and Derek Conti risked to face each other in the final, but both of them lost their semis to Nikos Beis (Greece) and Wolfgang Leitner (Austria) with the Greek player winning the title, after a couple of years ago he also won the Under 15 category of this Major tournament.

In the Veterans Category, Joseph Mifsud had once again to knee down to Olivier Pere from Belgium on the sudden death period. This also happened in the Scottish Grand Prix earlier this year.

The Under 19 category, saw once again the success of Angelo Borg who four weeks after the triumph in the French Grand Prix the Maltese player for Pireaus Lions (Greece) won this Major tournament and thus confirming the great form of the Maltese Under 19 captain.

The MTFSA, apart from congratulating the Maltese players for their achievements, invites the public to see these atlethes in action during the national league on the 20th March at the Vilhena Band Club Floriana or during the Malta International Open and Grand Prix to be held on April 2nd and 3rd.
