Valletta 4-2 Tarxien R

Champions Valletta continued their unbeaten run to thirty four league games as they passed a strong performance by Tarxien in the last game of day one of the 2011/12 season.

First Half

Nigerian striker Alfred Effiong continued his fine form as he scored two opportunist goals in the first half.

The former Marsaxlokk striker opened the score on the fifteen minute mark as he rounded Tarxien Rainbows goalkeeper David Cassar. Tarxien reacted fast as three minutes later Brazilian Daniel Mariano Bueno picked up possession just outside the area and an unstoppable shot gave no chance to Valletta goalkeeper Andrew Hogg.

Five minutes before the end of the first half “Fredu” was on target again, when Ian Azzopardi won possession in midfield and quickly released Effiong who fired a low shot drive past Cassar.

Second Half

In the beginning of the second half Tarxien had their opportunities but on the seventy second minute the game was over as Brazilian William Barbosa headed in a perfect Alfred Effiong cross.

Noel Coleiro’s side did manage to pull a goal back six minutes from time when they won a free-kick from a central position and Everton unleashed a powerful low shot that rolled into the net.

But still there was time for another goal as former Tarxien Rainbows star Denni Dos Santos scored his first of the season and the fourth for the champions to start the defence of the title with a strong win.
