The AFM football team, composed of select football players from the various units of the AFM, left Malta on Sunday to take part in a CISM World Cup qualifying tournament. Drawn against France and Cyprus, the AFM team, who over the past years five years won the Malta Employees Sports Association (MESA) football league twice and the knockout three times, will play a series of matches in Orange, France. Concurrently, another European qualifying group, composed of Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands, will be playing in Dublin.

In 2013, the European qualifying teams will join other qualifying teams from Africa, the Americas and Asia in the 1st CISM World Football Trophy due to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in June 2013. In total, sixteen teams will take part.

The AFM football team will play against Cyprus on Wednesday 21st November and against France on Friday, 23rd November, with Cyprus having played France on the Monday.

The team is headed by Chief of Mission, Lieutenant Colonel Mario Spiteri, who will lead the contingent with the assistance of Team Manager, Lieutenant Nicholas Grech and Team Coach, Sergeant Mark Marlow.

Participation in the tournament has been made possible with the help of Il-Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport (KMS) who is part-sponsoring the Team’s travelling expenses.

CISM is a large multidisciplinary organisation which organises sports events for the military personnel of its 133 member nations. The AFM has been a member of CISM since 2008 and has in the past participated in other events, most notably, the World Military games held in Rio de Janeiro in 2011 where the AFM was represented by three athletes in individual disciplines, namely athletics (marathon), boxing and triathlon

Good Luck to the AFM Football team. It is a great pity however, that AFM do not take part in the most important CISM Shooting Competitions when they have such excellent marksmen among its ranks!
