Sailing – Rolex Middle Sea Race 2015

The cannons of the Saluting Battery at the Upper Barrakka gardens will fire the start signals to the 2015 Rolex Middle Sea Race on Saturday, October 17.  A Race with a fascinating history which in its gone by 35 Editions raced over the past 46 years brought together some of the world’s most talented sailors and so many exceptional yachts.

The largest number of entries ever in the Rolex Middle Sea Race was 122 yachts from 24 different nationalities and this was established last year.

The current course record for the 606-nm legendary racecourse is 47 hours 55 minutes and 3 seconds established in 2007 by two remarkable skippers Ken Read and George David on Rambler.

A race with so many stories, of achievements and disappointments too, so many records of participation and of victories. 35 Editions which gave 15 Wins to  Italy, 7 Wins to  Malta, 4 Wins to the USA, 2 Wins each to France, Germany and to the United Kingdom and 1 Win each to South Africa, Austria and to Greece.

7 Wins to Malta which brought satisfaction and pride not only to the people who actually lifted the prestigious Trophy but also to so many other sailing enthusiasts in our small maritime country.

The protagonists in these moments of  local glory were:

Truly a great honour to all winners, owners, skippers and crew members for having their names inscribed in the historic archives of this sensational Race – where Christian Ripard with Four Wins (1996, 2001, 2011, and 2014) is the helmsman with the most number of  victories followed by the Italian Nello Mazzaferro who skippered Nita IV to three consecutive wins in 1978, 1979 and 1980.

Meanwhile in these weeks leading to the 2015 Big Day the distinct fleet of participants for the 36th Edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, organised in style by the Royal Malta Yacht Club and complimented with the esteem sponsorship of Rolex, is steadily growing and already includes many highly rated boats as well as some large multihulls.

Another Record Entry? …..maybe too early to confirm yet on course to attain!

Tiġrija Bi Storja Affaxxinanti!

Il-kanuni magħrufa bhala l-Batterija ta’ Merbħa fil-ġonna tal-Barrakka ta’ Fuq ser jgħatu s-sinjal għal bidu tar-Rolex Middle Sea Race 2015 nħar is-Sibt 17 t’Ottubru. Tiġrija bi storja notevoli li fil-35 edizzjonijiet tagħha li għaddew matul l-aħħar 46 sena ġabu flimkien ftit mill-baħrin l-aktar  kapaċi fid-dinja u tant jottijiet eċċezzjonali.

L-akbar numru ta’ parteċipanti li hadu sehem fir-Rolex Middle Sea Race kien ta’ 122 jott minn 24 nazzjon differenti u dan ġie stabbilit fl’edizzjoni tas-sena l-oħra.

Il-ħin rekord attwali tal-korsa leġġendarju ta’ 606-nm  huwa ta’ 47 sigħat 55 minuta u 3 sekondi li kien ġie stabbilit fl-2007 minn żewġ kaptani ferm notevoli Ken Read u George David fuq il-jott Rambler.

Tiġrija b’tant stejjer ta’ kisbiet u diżappunti ukoll, ta’ tant rekords ta’ parteċipazzjoni u ta’ rebħiet. 35 Edizzjoni li taw 15 irrebħa lill-Italja, 7 rebħiet lil Malta, 4 rebħiet lill-Istati Uniti tal-Amerika, 2 rebħiet kull wieħed lil Franza, il-Ġermanja u għar-Renju Unit u rebħa waħda kull wieħed għall-Afrika t’Isfel, l-Awstrija u għall-Greċja.

Seba’ rebħiet lil Malta li ġabu sodisfazzjon u kburija mhux biss lill-persuni li fil-fatt refgħu it-Trofej prestiġjużi iżda wkoll lill tant oħrajn dilettanti tal-ibburdjar fil-pajjiż marittimu żgħir tagħna.

Il-protagonisti f’dawn il-mumenti glorjużi kienu:

Tassew unur kbir lir-rebbieħa, sidien, kaptani u membri tal-ekwipaġġ kollha talli issimhom ġie nkluż fl-arkivji storiċi ta’ din it-tiġrija sensazzjonali – fejn Christian Ripard b’erba’ rebhiet (1996, 2001, 2011, u 2014) huwa ċ-Ċampjin bl-aktar numru ta’ rebħiet segwit mit-Taljan Nello Mazzaferro li mexxa l-jott Nita IV għal tliet rebħiet konsekuttivi fl-1978, 1979 u 1980.

Sadanittant f’dawn il-ġimgħat li wasslu għall-Jum il-Kbir tal-2015 il-flotta distinta ta’ parteċipanti għall-Edizzjoni 36 tal-Rolex Middle Sea Race, organizzata f’livell ferm għoli mir-Royal Malta Yacht Club bl-appoġġ  prestiġjuż tad-dita Rolex, qegħda dejjem tikber u li diġà tinkludi ħafna dgħajjes ta’ kalibru kif ukoll xi multihulls kbar.

Forsi sena oħra ta’ parteċipazzjoni record? ….. jista’ jkun għadu kmieni wisq biex jiġi ikkonfermat għalkemm bi prospetti tajbin li jista’ jiġri!

F’ċerimonja tal-għotja tal-premjijiet ta' edizzjoni bikrija tal-Middle Sea Race, Jimmy White jiġi kkumplementat minn Sir Anthony Mamo, dak-in-nħar President ta' Malta. White flimkien mal-ħabib tiegħu Alan Green kienu responsabbli għall-kunċett tal-Middle Sea Race. (Ritratt: Hector Borg Carbott).

It-trofew klassiku tar-Rolex Middle Sea kien ġie oriġinat, immudellat-tafal, fl-1968 minn Chevalier Emvin Cremona (1919-1987) rikonoxxut bħala wieħed mill-pijunieri tal-arti moderna f'Malta. Hekk kif kien iffinalizzat il-mudell dan kien ġie mgħoddi għall-produzzjoni fil-funderija Francis Abela and Sons. (Ritratt: Rolex/Kurt Arrigo)
