9 Gold Medals for Malta Team at the Small States of Europe Karate Championships in Iceland

22 athletes from Malta Karate Federation aged between 12 and 25 took part in the 6th edition of The Small States of Europe Karate Championships which were held in Reykjavik, Iceland, between 13th September and 15th September 2019.

Athletes competed in both Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring) winning a total of 9 Gold, 4 Silver and 12 Bronze medals.  212 elite athletes, in 330 entries, from Iceland, Cyprus, Liechetenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco and San Marino, took part in these championships.

Malta Team was accompanied by Audrey Zammit as HOD, MKF President Kenneth Abela, Technical Director Jesmond Schembri, National Coaching Team Michelle Vella, Tyler Tanti, Josef Antonelli and Joseph Mizzi and MKF Referees Anthony Zammit, Susan Zammit, Frankie Vella and Elizabeth Grech. ‘We are extremely pleased  to welcome Elizabeth Grech and Susan Zammit, who are now fully qualified SSEKF Referees, and Frankie Vella, now a fully qualified SSEKF judge in refereeing panel for Small States of Europe Karate Federation’ commented Anthony Zammit MKF Chief Refereeing Commissioner and member of the SSEKC Refereeing Commission.

‘Once again the Malta Team left a mark in what has become one very important annual event for Malta Karate Federation.  The results achieved are an outcome of top performance and preparation, both physically and mentally, on the part of our athletes, as well as the contribution of a group of highly dedicated coaches who strive to provide the best training opportunities.  This together with a vision to elevate the level of Karate in Malta in both kata and kumite and consolidate our position internationally.  We would like to thank Maltese Olympic Committee and SportMalta for their continuous support.’ These were the comments of MKF President Kenneth Abela.
