50 years in Sports journalism

Mario Meli

Mario Meli, a sports broadcaster with PBS and freelance sport journalist, is celebrating 50 years in his distinguished career.  It was in February 1962 that he joined Rediffusion, now the Public Broadcasting Services.

During his career, he has contributed a lot, both as a programme presenter as well as a commentator, especially football, including the national team matches.

In fact, he presented hundred of programmes on television and radio.

During these years he interviewed a good number of sport personalities – Maltese and foreigners – such as Joe Havelandge, the FIFA President, Antonio Samaranch, the International Olympic Committee President, Joseph Blatter the FIFA Secretary at that time, Lennart Johansson the UEFA President, and also top athetes as Emil Zatopek, Roger Bannister, Sebastian Coe, Stanlery Matthews, Bobby Moore, Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Said Auita, Juantorena, Arnold Kloss the Noregian Olymic Winter Champion, Chris Chataway and many others.

He proudly remember his participation reporting on the Olympic Games, the World Cup, Commonwealth Games, Mediterranean Games, Small Nations Games and the world championhsips of cycling, snooker, chess, table tennis and others.

Apart from broadcasting Meli was also active as a freelance journalist during these 50 years. He was a regular contributor in ‘Sport’, published for many years, and also a regular contributor for eight years with the Maltese newspaper ‘In-Nazzjon’.

He was also the author of several publications on sport.

On the administrations side, he worked with several associations.  He served for many years in the committee of the Billiards and Snooker Association, the Malta Table Tennis Association, he was President for seven years of the Malta Cycling Federation and introduced the Tour of Malta. He also served for many years on the Executive of the Malta Olympic Committee.

He was one of the founders of the Sports Writer’s Association in 1970 and served in the committee in various posts.  At the moment he occupies the post of Treasurer.

In his younger days he used to coach in athletics, football, swimming and other sport.
