5 in-a-row for ‘Unbeatable’ okmalta.com

Okmalta.com’s perfect unbeaten record has continued through week five of the MSV Life National League, which marked their fifth consecutive 8 – 0 victory, this time against St. James Hospital for a maximum interim points total of 40. Rogantino’s Restaurant saw off The Clan in similar fashion to claim a joint second place, erasing the previous advantage of Bowlers On Strike, who dropped two points in their win over a hapless Fina outfit this week. Turu’s Knights got the better of Ramis in a 6 – 2 victory, and there was an identical win for J Grima & Co over Bank of Valletta.

With this latest in an incredible run of full point victories, defending champions have already amassed 40 league points, and are ten points clear at the top of the classification with not even one third of the season completed. The leaders can do no wrong, and started their week five rout of St. James Hospital with an easy 677 – 822 opening win, before then doubling their advantage with a 661 – 792 game two result. It was all over bar the shouting with one game remaining, and that went 717 – 799 to the champs, to seal all eight yet again. Neil Sullivan (okmalta.com), 682. Male bowler of the week. Helenio Grech (St. James Hospital), 588.

Rogantino’s previous season was one of their strongest ever, rewarding them with a third place finish, and they are now holding a joint second place, after thrashing The Clan (ninth) in the second of two 8 – 0 results in week five. Rogantino’s opened strongly, rolling the team game of the week to beat The Clan 868 – 684 to go 2 – 0 ahead. Play settled down a little in game two but Rogantino’s 770 was more than enough to make it 4 – 0, as their opponents could only manage a 620, and then the winning team rounded off the hammering with a closer game three win, 765 – 725 the score line. David Fenech (Rogantino’s Restaurant), 606. Matthew Cossai (The Clan), 522.

Bowlers on Strike are level with Rogantino’s on 30 points, but drop to third on total pinfall, after a giant-killing 6 – 2 win over Fina in week five. Fina have bagged just 20 from 40 points to date, pushing them down into fifth place. They started poorly this week, losing the first game 756 – 744, and then dipping further as Bowlers On Strike went four up with a good 800 – 693 win in game two. Fina did manage to regroup for the last of the set, saving their own blushes with a 728 – 813 win, and a quarter share of the points. Alan Borg (Bowlers on Strike), 580. Sue Abela (Fina), 583.

Turu’s Knights have leapfrogged their week five opponents, Ramis, moving fourth thanks to a 6 – 2 victory. The Knights drew first blood by taking the opener 798 – 708, and were soon four ahead thanks to and 824 – 752 game two win. Ramis then managed to claim two points, more due to their opponents’ failings than their own merit, the 696 – 714 surely a disappointing one for Turu’s. Melissa Swift (Turu’s Knights), 609. Female bowler of the week. Philip Gruppetta (Ramis), 573.

Eighth placed side J Grima & Co can breathe a little easier, having beaten bottom side, Bank of Valletta this week to push themselves eight points clear of the relegation zone for now. They clinched the unimpressive first game 715 – 664, before improving in game two which they won 768 – 690 for a 129 pin cushion going into game three. It was to be the closest of the series, but Ramis managed to claw back a 730 – 756 win, with the match finishing 6 – 2 to J Grima & Co. Benny Hili (J Grima & Co), 603. Patrick Xuereb (Bank of Valletta), 549.
