Qormi  3    Hotsticks   0    Umpires  Luke Busuttil Leaver    Edward Hughes

A biting wind combined with low temperatures heralded the start of this season’s league campaign.   Qormi started brightly and drew first blood in the 6th minute when Juan Sarcia netted as a result of a penalty corner action.  A minute later Charlo Sammut doubled their tally with a well taken effort from the top of the D.   Hotsticks then reacted strongly and won three penalty corners but did not manage to reduce the deficit and following a period of balanced play Qormi broke away when Steve Cachia cut through the Hotsticks defence rounding their goalkeeper and passing to John Williams who scored from close range putting Qormi 3 – 0 up, a lead they maintained up to half time.

The second half saw Qormi administering their lead and although Hotsticks applied pressure throughout the half forcing three penalty corners in the process, the game developed into a ding dong battle in midfield with few chances for both teams to add to their tally.  The final whistle saw Qormi running out 3 – 0 winners.

Rabat   0     Young Stars   1      Umpires   Paul Brincat   Manuel Imbroll

Rabat won  their first penalty corner in the 4th minute but were not able to open their account.   Tight marking in midfield dominated proceedings for the next ten minutes but in the 16th minute Rabat’s Kevin Micallef shot past the post as a result of a penalty corner action.   In the 20th minute Rabat won another penalty corner and Shawn Falzon released a tremendous volley which James Mizzi, the Young Stars goalkeeper, saved brilliantly.   Rabat pressed further and a minute before half time they won another penalty corner which again saw Shawn Falzon’s shot saved by James Mizzi who then smothered two rebounds to keep his net intact and the score level at half time.

The second half saw Young Stars win their first penalty corner in the 43rd minute and Andrew Camilleri netted to give them a 1 – 0 lead.  Rabat fought back and in the 45th minute James Mizzi affected another save off Shawn Falzon’s  penalty corner effort.   Pressing for an equalizer Charlot Antonelli then missed a sitter for Rabat in 59th minute and after a further period of sustained pressure in the 68th minute James Mizzi affected another match saving intervention capping a masterful performance which secured victory for Young Stars in a close and hard fought encounter.
