The second annual MTBA Bronze Cup Tournament was held recently at the Eden SuperBowl, and attracted an excellent field of 36 tenpin bowlers from beginner to intermediate level, including a good number of Malta’s Special Olympics tenpin bowling squad. They competed in separate male and female divisions, while a handicap system was adopted to ensure a more level playing field.

-Female Division: Briffa stages Round Robin fight-back

After four games in the first qualifying session, S.O. bowler Michaela Fenech Conti led the female section with a 723 total, just nicking the top spot by a mere two pins ahead of Alessia Schembri in second place, on 721 pins. Gabriella Zahra qualified in third place, with her 692 tally.

Joining the top three in the final stages were; Michaela Briffa, her sister Raisa, and Natasha Bianchi in 4th through 5th place respectively. The six qualifiers then competed in the Round Robin Final stage, starting from zero and also able to claim extra bonus points for match wins/draws, over and above their game scores.

It was here that Raisa, the younger of the Briffa siblings came into her own, shooting 190-195-170-186 for four straight wins, and racking up a valuable 80 bonus points to boot. Her low 128 in game five did little to detract from her performance, as she walked off with the 2015 Bronze Cup title with a 949 total.

Alessia Schembri finished second on 895, closely followed by Michaela Fenech Conti in third place on 889.

-Men’s Division: Runaway final day win for Ricciari

Youngster and scratch bowler, Kurt Attard was the top male competitor after four on day one, shooting a great average of 208.0 for an 832 total, which included highs of 223 and 222. He was followed into the finals by Daniel Magro in second place (806), and Daniel Ricciari in third on 776.

The other three Round Robin slots were filled by Ayrton Ciangura (772) in fourth, and the Burke twins, Kyle (754) and Luke (743) in fifth and sixth respectively.

Daniel Ricciari stepped his game up for the finals, emulating Raisa Briffa’s efforts with four wins out of five including highs of 205, 208 and an excellent 239. That gave him a 1120 final tally, more than enough to hand him the Bronze Cup title for 2015.

Kyle Burke claimed silver on 1063 having also clocked four match wins, while third place went to day one leader, Kurt Attard on 1034.

Other than taking home the Bronze Cup titles, the two winners were awarded with cash vouchers to be used in lieu of entry fees for upcoming events, courtesy of the Malta Tenpin Bowling Association.
