Ladies Doubles: Strong Finishes earns Bronze for Abela, Carannante

Following Sue Abela’s earlier success in the Ladies’ Singles event (Silver medal), and a bronze for Neil Sullivan in the extremely tough Men’s division, Team Malta claimed yet more silverware on Wednesday evening, with a Bronze in the Ladies Doubles for Sue Abela and Tiziana Carannante.

Sue Abela showed classic form during the six game series, while her partner struggled with the lanes in her earlier games, which saw the pair lagging behind the medal positions as the session wore on. However that would change in the sixth and final game which saw both ladies shoot their best scores of the day, a better 182 from Tiziana, and a formidable 279 from Sue, for a joint 461. That great effort was enough to catapult Team Malta into third place, for a bronze award that had seemed out of their reach after a full five games.

Team Malta scored a total of 2250 pins, and the event was won by the Italian pairing of Elga Di Benedetto and Melania Rossi on a huge 2636 total, followed by Yiola Pastou and Myria Kastori (Cyprus) on 2293. A disappointed Israeli team (Lynne Fishler, Tal Yifat) had to make do with fourth place on 2236.

Thursday sees the Mixed Doubles competition, with the the 4-Man Team event on Friday, before the all important Masters Finals on Saturday.
