2012 TENOVAR Gold Cup starting this weekend

Sunday, March 18, 2012, 8:00

The 2012 edition of the Gold Cup Open Tournament, newly sponsored by TENOVAR Ltd. will be starting this weekend at the Eden SuperBowl. With no fewer than 32 bowlers registered to participate, this is the most popular event in the local tenpin bowling calendar, organised by the Malta Tenpin Bowling Association (MTBA).

The TENOVAR Gold Cup is an event aimed specifically at bowlers with a game average of not more than 180 for men, and 175 for women, and participants are awarded extra handicap pins per game, according to their individual average, which makes it all the more attractive to the wider spectrum.

The tournament format comprises a twelve game qualifying round, played over two six game sessions, with the top six bowlers from the male and female categories qualifying for the stage two. That will be a ‘Round Robin’ stage, where the qualifiers will play a series of head-to-dead matches against all other remaining participants in their respective division. Apart from game scores, there will also be a bonus point system applied, awarding an extra twenty pins for a game win, or ten for a draw.

The top three bowlers from stage two will then compete in the Stepladder finals: Third against second for the each semi-final match, with the winners of those encounters going on to face the top seeds, in the grand finals of their respective categories.

Apart from trophies and tournament titles, the eventual TENOVAR Gold Cup Champions will be rewarded with an all-expenses paid trip abroad, to participate in an international open tournament of their own choice.

The bowling schedule for the TENOVAR Gold Cup will be:

Qualifying Round:

Sunday 18th March, 0930

Sunday 25th March, 0930

Stage Two, followed by Stepladder Final:

Sunday 1st April, 0930

Spectators are more than welcome at the Eden SuperBowl.
