October saw the 3rd annual edition of the MTBA Senior Championships, played at the Eden SuperBowl, St. Julian’s. The 50yrs-plus event, played over one day, saw Josephine Borg claim an excellent third senior title in a row, while the men’s competition was won by Benny Hili, who was the inaugural Senior Champion along with Josephine, back in 2010.

Ladies’ Division: No threat to Borg for 3rd national title

The defending Champion got off to a mediocre start in her six game series, opening with a fair 173 before dropping to a 156 in game two to leave the ladies event wide open. Game three was where Josephine then began to take charge, roiling a gross 212, backed up with a 193 in the fourth to put some daylight between herself and the rest of the field with two games remaining.

Borg finished of with a 195 and a 194, for a gross total of 1123, which was enough to reward her with National Senior Champion title number three in as many years.

Josephine’s nearest challenger was Mary Galea  down on 963 pins, with Josephine Bonello back in third on 943. Maryanne Mula finished fourth on 843.

Men’s Division: Hili prevails in very close finish

The senior men’s event was a much closer run thing, with at least five 50+ bowlers easily in with a chance of bagging this year’s honours. Eventual champion Benny Hili opened with a low 164 game, but then quickly found his scoring pace to bang in high consecutive games of 216, 203 and 235 to power into the lead.

The win was not going to be as easy as Benny may have thought, as he then dropped to a penultimate game of 164, with the likes of Division I regulars Paul Baldacchino and Roy Swift hot on his heels. In fact it was all still to play for as game six rolled off.

A 197 but Hili in a 1179 total, enough for victory but a mere four pins ahead of Paul Baldacchino in second on 1175, and Roy Swift just two pins behind that on 1173 in third place. Fourth place went to Leli Baldacchino on 1168 to round up a very tight top four.

Other than the honour of their National Senior Championship titles, Benny and Josephine were also rewarded with complimentary entries to the Eden SuperBowl’s 15th Senior Malta Open, courtesy of the MTBA.
