The 2011 edition of the MTBA National Championships, newly sponsored by TENOVAR Ltd. will get underway this weekend at the Eden SuperBowl, St. Julian’s. The Nationals are the most prestigious event in the local tenpin bowling calendar, and will feature 2010 champions Neil Sullivan and Sue Abela, aiming to defend their respective titles against a top field of Malta’s bowling elite.

The TENOVAR MTBA National Championships will be played to a tried and tested, yet simple format, competed over a total of 24 games, comprising three separate eight-game sessions. As always the Nationals will be a ‘scratch’ event, meaning that no handicap system will be applied. The eventual champions, apart from having the honour of being crowned National Champions for 2011, will go on to compete in the 2011 edition of the European Champions Cup, to be held in Lahti, Finland this August.

Varying lane oil patterns will be utilized during the event, varying from ‘short’ oil on day one, ‘long’ oil on day two, and a ‘dual’ long/short combination on the third and final day. This system tests bowlers’ abilities on the lanes, ensuring that top positions go to truly deserving bowlers, able to adapt to the varying conditions and maintain a winning game average.

The 2011 edition of the MTBA National Champions welcomes a new sponsor to the sport of tenpin bowling, TENOVAR Ltd. Company Director, Mr. David Falzon decided to become involved after noting the high levels of success attained by Maltese bowlers in the international arena over the years, commenting, ‘I think that many do not realise the levels reached by Malta’s bowlers in local events, but particularly abroad, even the fact that bowling actually produced a European Champion a few years back (Sue Abela, 1999). TENOVAR Ltd are glad to be now associated with that success, and we look forward to a great tournament.’
