38 athletes representing the Malta Karate Federation aged between 6 and 17 years participated in the Cojinkai Karate Open Championships which were held on the 10th March 2019 in Penrith UK.

Over 400 athletes from England, Malta, Scotland and Wales participated in both Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring) where the Malta Team landed 11 Gold, 10 Silver and 20 Bronze.  National Coaches Joe Tanti, Josef Antonelli, Joseph Mizzi and Tyler Tanti who are also accredited by the World Karate Federation, accompanied the athletes.

“This is an exceptional result with an impressive number of gold medals won in this tournament.  Our vision is to keep building on our promising athletes by providing the highest technical level in Karate training for both Kata and Kumite.  This whilst collaborating together with our technical staff and coaches to better support our athletes.  Moreover, the results are especially encouraging in the light of the current negotiations taking place to include Karate as part of the GSSE games in 2023. We would like to thank Sportmalta and MOC for their constant support.”  This was the comment of Sensei Jesmond Schembri, Technical Director of Malta Karate Federation.
