100% win over MIA doubles precarious lead for Fina

Having managed to hang on to a shaky two point lead at the top of the MSV Life National League, week eleven saw Fina double that to four, thanks to their full point win over Malta Int. Airport. They were aided in that by second placed okmalta.com, who dropped two points in their win against Turu’s Knights, while third placed Ramis continued to slip up, losing 6 – 2 to HSBC. Strugglers Salitos pulled off an 8 – 0 victory over bottom side Gladiators, and there was a 6 – 2 win for Royal Shock against The Clan.

Having taken a narrow two point league advantage, Fina have made heavy work of hanging on to it over the past three weeks. In week eleven they met Malta Int. Airport whose primary goal is top flight survival in this their debut season in Div I. Fina’s dominance was evident from the opening frames of the match, and they started with a convincing 839 – 684 game one win. They went four up with an 841 – 717 game two score line, and closed with an 812 – 678 game three win to easily take all eight. Kenneth Arpa (Fina), 665, male bowler of the week. Charles Farruigia (MIA), 523.

It was okmalta.com who had conceded the top spot to Fina, and are now in hot pursuit to regain the lead, in spite of dropping two points in their week eleven win against Turu’s Knights. It was the latter who drew first blood, winning the opener 764 – 811 but their opponents were quick to react with a very nervy 803 – 800 game two equalizer. The Knights held a 44-pin advantage heading into the deciding third game, which was only just cancelled out by okmalta.com’s 815 – 767 game win, which also gave them the match points by a mere four pins (2382 – 2378). Dennis Mercieca (okmalta.com), 634. Ramon Casha (Turu’s Knights), 611.

There was a relegation clash between Salitos and Gladiators this week, the two having shared the bottom spot after week ten. Salitos looked confident in the first of the series, winning it 764 – 673 for the early lead. They then doubled up with a closer 700 – 680 win in the second, before making sure of the full-point victory with a 713 – 687 win, meaning they now have an eight point cushion over the Gladiators, but are still four points away from survival. Benny Hili (Salitos), 562. Nikolai Borg (Gladiators), 516.

HSBC seem to be sitting comfortably in mid-table, having won their week eleven clash with third placed Ramis with a 6 – 2 score line. Ramis were first on the scoreboard thanks to their 743 – 816 game one win, but sure enough the bankers bounced back to level the match with a 777 – 735 game two result. HSBC then made sure of the major share of the points with an 810 – 767 game three win. Sammy Borg (HSBC), 584. Paul Baldacchino (Ramis), 634.

The third 6 – 2 result of the week fell in favour of Royal Shock, in their confrontation with The Clan. The eventual winners began with a 769 – 722 victory in the first of the set, and then went four in front by also bagging the second game, 775 – 737. That gave them an 85 pin cushion as the last game of the series rolled off. That went 723 – 751 to The Clan, which was only enough for a two point share, as the match points went to Royal Shock (2267 – 2210). Pierre Yves Galea (Royal Shock), 596. James Vassallo (The Clan), 577.
