Okmalta.com, Fina both claim majority wins

Week eleven of the MSV Life National League saw the Div I race get even closer, with Ramis winning 0 – 8 against St. James Hospital, and okmalta.com and Fina both claiming majority victories against Turu’s Knights and MIA respectively. This means there are just two points separating the top three (okmalta.com – 68, Ramis – 66, Fina – 66), with seven more weeks remaining in the current season. In other matches, Rogantino’s took all eight against J Grima & Co, while The Clan got the better of Supreme in a 2 – 6 score line.

It’s now too close to call at the top of Division I, as the run of the week eleven results tightened up the top three even further, to put yet more pressure on leaders and defending champions, okmalta.com. Ramis are now two points behind in second after their 0 – 8 hammering of St. James’ Hospital, although level on points with third placed Fina. The started with a 769 – 805 game one win, but game two could easily have gone to their opponents who, missed out on the points by just seven pins (782 – 789). Ramis’ best was yet to come as they took game three 793 – 857, a fantastic team effort which featured a 289 game from Mark Spiteri, who left the four-pin standing in what he hoped would be his twelfth consecutive strike, to complete a perfect 300 game, the second in his career. That was not to be, but Spiteri did take the honours for male bowler of the week, for an excellent 761 series (236-236-289), which is also the highest individual series of the season to date. Helenio Grech (St. James Hospital), 557.

Okmalta.com shot the team series of the week (2516), but still dropped two points in their win against MIA. The defending champions started strongly with an easy 680 – 842 opening win, and then went four ahead with even greater ease, taking game two 628 – 844. As game three rolled off, the leaders must surely have already been counting their chickens, taking a full-point for granted, such was the deficiency in the MIA challenge. The game was a high-scoring thriller, going right down to the final shots, and falling to MIA by a solitary pin (831 – 830) to earn them their quarter share of the points, 2 – 6 being the final result. Neil Sullivan (okmalta.com), 667. Alfred Pulis (MIA), 526.

Fina also took six points from their clash with fourth placed Turu’s Knights, but slip below Ramis in the rankings due to an inferior pinfall to date. It was the Knights who drew first blood by taking the first of the series 697 – 770, but Fina then bounced straight back with a 748 – 721 game two equalizer. Fina’s form continued to improve through the deciding third game which they won easily (841 – 725), to make sure of the series points, and the match (2286 – 2216). Justin Caruana Scicluna (Fina), 642. Ryan Grech (Turu’s Knights), 596.

Rogantino’s bagged all eight points against J Grima & Co, to go level with Turu’s Knights on 52 points. The losing side offered little resistance in the first two games, which both fell to their opponents, 825 – 653, 720 – 623 respectively. Rogantino’s then slipped to a low 689 in the last of the set, only just managing to clinch it with an eight pin advantage, as J Grima & Co failed to capitalize (681). Pierre Yves Galea (Rogantino’s), 578. Colin Attard (J Grima & Sons), 528.

Supreme are now last in Division I, and look destined for a return to the second tier at the end of the season after suffering a 2 – 6 defeat at the hands of sixth placed The Clan. Ironically it was Supreme who had the early advantage thanks to their 728 – 714 opening win, but it was then all square after two, as The Clan responded with a 650 – 691 game two leveller. The latter then made sure of the majority share of the points with a 676 – 693 game three win, to take the series by 44 pins (2054 – 2098). Giancarlo Tolu (The Clan), 561. Frans Vella (Supreme), 512.
